Menopause Depression
« on: November 29, 2023, 11:02:54 AM »

Morning All  :)

I was wondering if anyone has any experience with very bad depression, mood changes and anxiety?
I'm on 100mg hrt patch for 9 months after being on 75mg and it's made no difference.
My GP is now talking about putting me on an anti depressent too but I'm not sure that will help as I know it's menapause depression rather than 'life' depression.
I had a huge tumour in my womb so had hysterectomy (ovaries kept) when I was 37 (I'm 46 now) and started with menapausal symptoms 6 months later.

Anyone's experience would be much appreciated ☺️

Hi there

I have recently started on sertraline for anxiety and very low mood. I too am on a 100mg patch but it wasn't helping with this particular symptom.

I've been taking sertraline for about 3 weeks now and I feel a lot better for it. It's a low dose but I feel it's what I needed to just get the low mood under control. I don't plan on staying on it forever but quite honestly I'll try anything to get me back feeling like I used to. This menopause stuff sucks xx

That's interesting thank you. ;)

I feel like I'm a shell of the person I was and am having a hard time accepting this is changing my personality and I may never return to who I was. :-\

I've always been really outgoing, sociable and fun and now I stay in, don't socialise anymore, I'm irritable and intolerant of people and most things.

I hate the way my hair is thin, skin changing, weight gain through comfort eating, mind fog, inability to string a sentence together, tiredness and joint pain. I just don't even recognise myself 😔

Have any of your systems been helped by hrt? Just wondering if you don't absorb well transdermally so the dose you're getting is insufficient.

Hi Sallypaws,

I haven’t had a hysterectomy so I’m not qualified to comment really, but I’m sure plenty of people will be along who have, and can.

However, can I assume you aren’t taking any progesterone? I had many of the symptoms you describe, especially the low mood and my meno specialist put me on utrogestan. She told me it would alleviate my low mood, joint pains, tiredness, brain fog etc and she was absolutely right. I feel normal again.

I have read posts on here regarding hysterectomy and a need for progesterone because of its systemic benefits. Not everyone needs it and some loath it, but I need it and maybe you could benefit from it too.

Just a thought.

Yep, could have written that myself! I have not had a hysterectomy but did go into peri fairly young, I'm still only 43 and think I'm nearing post meno. I have/had all those symptoms you mention and I'm also a different person to who I was. I'm losing hair, my joints ache, don't want to socialise. Hrt has not addressed these issues, I've just accepted this is aging. You are definitely not alone, we are all going through it and it's total bs! x

My hot sweats was the only thing really that my patches helped.

I can't have the tablets as I'm prone to blood clots and the gel irritates my skin 🙄

I have been told by my GP that because I have my ovaries I will just need the estrogen and not progesterone?

Thank you guys for your replies ❤️
