Do I need more HRT?
« on: November 17, 2023, 08:51:25 PM »

Hello,

I’ve been on 3 and a quarter pumps Oestrogel and continuous Utrogestan for a while now. I’m confused because facial flushing and high anxiety has returned?

I’m 55, so possibly my own hormones are fluctuating?

Would I need more or less Oestrogel if it continues?

Any help appreciated, thank you ☺️

I’d say you need more if your symptoms have returned. Or it could be that you’ve stopped absorbing it.

Also depends where you are in menopause too? Although 80% of women have reached menppause by age 54, depends on what your cycle was doing when you started hRT. If you know you are well post-menopause then your own levels will not be cycling in any meaningful way that you should notice especially if you're taking a decent dose of oestrogen (but never say never!). If you are now, say between 2 and 3 years post-menopause then your own levels will have dropped to a low level from the time of the last ovulation and you may well be sensitive to this - though again this may be less noticeable with that amount of oestrogen replacement.  Otherwise as Dotty says, you may not be absorbing so well? How long have you been taking it?

Thanks for replying Dotty and Hurdity, I appreciate it.

I’ve been on Oestrogel and Utrogestan since June 2021, started on 1 pump and worked up to three and a quarter which I’ve been on for over a year.  Utrogestan has been changed to continuous February 2023 as I was having migraines - this helps but recently (last few weeks) migraines again.

Migraines are often triggered by allergens for me so I’m on regular antihistamine too.

When I first began HRT I’d not had a period for 8 months but had bleeds again when on cyclical regime (Utrogestan days 15-26).  No bleeds since being on continuous.

I think my current migraines may be due to my own hormones in background as that has happened before.

I’ve not really had a problem with absorption up to now, could that happen after being on the gel for so long?

Thank you both x

Just out of interest, have you had Covid in the last few months? I only ask because I was bumbling along quite well on oestrogel and utrogestan, had Covid, bumbled on a bit further and then the problems started…..anxiety, migraines, facial flushing, dizziness. I saw a meno specialist who talked at length about Covid, histamines, oestrogen. Anyway, she put me onto patches and life improved considerably……particularly the migraines. I still take an antihistamine though….

Hi Wannabewell,

I also found my symptoms returned on 'new' oestrogel. Two weeks ago I swapped oestrogel for Sandrena and I feel like my old self.

I stuck with oestrogel upping and upping my dose and never feeling better. I wish I swapped to Sandrena months ago. Good luck xxx

Hi CeCe and Banjo

I had Covid last December, that’s interesting about the change to the patches, I wonder why they’re working better?

I am not on the newer bottles of Oestrogel as yet, that’s good to know about Sandrena.

My mood has been low this afternoon too, I do get cyclical depression but originally the HRT had reduced episodes and severity of it, that seems like it’s not controlled as well now.

Thank you both xx
