Facial flushing
« on: November 02, 2023, 11:32:48 PM »

Hi all, I hope ye are well. I’m 6 weeks on everel patches and progesterone tablets for perimenopause. I’m 45. Tonight I have facial flushing for the past hour and half. I never had it before. I’m well hydrated. I started magnesium glycinate yesterday after taking magnesium citrate for past month. Reason for changing to different type of magnesium is my main symptom is anxiety and palpitations. Any thoughts as to why I have the facial flushing and how to relief it??

Magnesium is not known for flushing  unless the new one has different fillers in which you have reacted to?

One of the b vitamins,  I think niacin l, can cause flushing as they sell a no-flush version, you've not switched any b vitamins have you?

Also could it just be a return of meno symptoms, was that one of the symptoms you went onto hrt for?

Hi there, no I haven’t experience facial flushing before. I’m on HRT for anxiety, palpitations, brain fog etc. I’m taking Vit D for a few weeks with no issues. Perhaps it is a new menopause symptom

Magnesium can cause facial flushing if your levels are too high. It can also cause anxiety and changes in heart rate again if your level is high. Have you had your level tested? You might not need to supplement?

This sounds like histamine, which can turn up in women as they get into meno or start HRT (I have histamine intolerance, been a right game finding a gynae who knows her stuff wiht all this).  Louise Newsom and Tina Peers have info on their websites about histamine and HRT and menopause.

You could try an antihistamine and see if that helps, that'd answer some questions.  Also most histaminey women are sensitive to progesterone as well (Oestrogen is mast cell aggravating, but progesterone in too big doses can also complicate things).

If you think it could be histamine, then following a low histamine diet (the swiss list is best, google it) then that would empty your histamine bucket enough to tolerate the HRT without tipping you into overload symptoms.

I never had any facial flushing or redness whatsoever until I started oestrogel 2.5 years post menopause.

I was informed by the specialist that my awful overheating, sweating buckets, dizziness, sudden extreme shivering when soaked wet that even put my jaw out of place once, changing clothes all day then all night too, isn't actually what hot flushes are.

She said hot flushes are a creeping warmth that makes your cheeks red.

I've only had that since being on oestrogel and I think, well first I think she was spouting BS, of course I was having hot flushes.

My second thought is my hot flushes have reduced to the extent where instead of changing sweaty clothes all day, I just get a bit warm looking, like her mild definition. I'll have to tell my sister, she said she thought she was having a heart attack her first severe flush, she would laugh at the specialist definition too.

Could it be your body isn't going overboard to cool you down every second so you're looking warmer now? I think that has happened to me, I'm 54, but I'll follow this incase it's something else.

Like allergies, histamine doesn't behave normally on me for sure. I was told that after testing by the top (maybe only) allergy specialist in the country almost 20 years ago.

Thanks all. I’m just unsure as to why it started now after having no issues for past 5 weeks?! It lasted approx 2 hours last night. Aa for histamine.. interesting! If it happens again I may try anti histamine. The facial flushing just doesn’t help my anxiety!

Anxiety is also a histamine symptom.  A friend of mine also has mast cell issues with meno, and facial flushing is a big symptom for her.

It might have been something you ate or drank - curry, wine, aged cheese, cured meats are the worst, certain supplements, and then where you are in your cycle if you are still peri (I'm worst mid cycle, E peaking around day 12).

It can take a few weeks for your 'bucket' to overflow, you've only been on it a few weeks.  Defo something to have a read about and try an antihistamine - I use fexofenadine, you can get it over the counter.
