Managing GP challenges
« on: October 31, 2023, 04:17:00 PM »

I’ve had success with Vagifem but found that it didn’t quite reach the outer areas. I tried Ovestin but it doesn’t seem to agree with me.

A menopause specialist suggested Blissell but my GP won’t prescribe it. She said I have to pay for a private prescription and if it works, then I can try the GP route.

Is this usual?

I am on a HRT regime which includes Utro and Oestrogel too. Ideally I’d go via the GP as I am medically exempt due to my thyroid.

Did U C a private specialist?  GPs sometimes won't prescribe on the NHS.

Can U buy Blissell [sounds like a push/shove carpet cleaner  ::) ] OTC ??

Other products to consider are 'yes' and 'sylc', have a look C at their websites - U may even get freebies ;-)

Why can’t your GP prescribe it ? It’s available on the NHS. x

Thank you. She said the guidance was that the private consultant should prescribe and assuming I get on OK with it, then the NHS could prescribe.

That’s why I’m confused because it sounds like the NHS can prescribe but she was reluctant.

I am using moisturiser but it’s not enough unfortunately. There’s a big difference between the deeper part where the Vagifem pessary goes - so I know it’s working there - and the entry/first third so I think I need something directly in that area.

Did your GP refer you to the private menopause specialist?  it seems OK to be overseen by the specialist initially who can 'refer back to GP' when the regime is stable.

Thank you. No I paid privately for it so perhaps that’s why.

Was hoping to avoid the extra costs for a private prescription but seems unavoidable.

I think my GP would prescribe on the advice of a private appointment.  When mine suggested a private one for my knee problem she told me if they suggested cortisone injection nit to pay as she can give it.
