Painful ears
« on: October 12, 2023, 05:10:43 PM »

So my new peri delight is a very high pressure/fullness in ears along with pretty bad pain and and tinitus....the pain radiates into my jaw, face  neck, gums....very clicky noises in ears (eustation issues)

I have blocked up stuffy sinuses too...

I've always struggled with these symptoms prior to peri (never infection) just that muffled blocked feeling/sinus congestion/allergies....not pain tho or ever infection. Now it's due to hormonal change.. I feel powerless as usually I just deal with it with the usual stuff and it passes.....

I know peri makes all these areas dry up and be extra prone to these symptoms....

But the pressure in my ears and the pain is pretty unbearable.

Seems peri likes to go for your weak points...

I've definitely noticed I'm so much drier in my mouth, nose  eyes etc...of late.

Had ears checked. Left one OK. Right one has otitis externa (ear infection) which at least accounts for some of my pain and misery....

But I just feel these head symptoms are a struggle. Getting me down trying to unpick why...I think TMJ might play a part too...

Anyone else? Advice? Suggestions? Will it ebb and flow?.....(NB. I'm bedridden so cannot go to specialists etc...a nurse came to my house to check my ears)

Can't cope with this for months on end.....

Cheers me dears xxxxx

Hey.

I have this. Was one of my first peri symptoms. Full ears. Awful. Sometimes painful. Now ebbs and flows along with my ups and downs of my cycle, plus whatever I may be changing in an attempt to bring balance.  :(

Also get sinus headaches, again, depending on what I try, I van I crease their frequency or decrease. I tried the mini pill in the summer - daily sinus headaches.

For me it's all hormonal. I'm sorry you're experiencing this too.

Perhaps when the ear infection clears, things will feel better. Xx

'full' is a good description.  As we age the Eustachian tubes may narrow, plus I've been told recently by an ear specialist that mine canals are hairy  :o  ::).  Which made wax removal very difficult as he was unable to see into the drum.

I've had allergic rhinitis for many years and currently, have that irritating constant clearing-throat cough  :(.  It went for a few months this year after I cut out hidden sugars, now I have to go through my daily diet: again : to find out what I've added that might B causing it.  I will start with cutting out dried blueberries .......

Does pain relief help at all?  I get a sudden nip which makes me go 'ouch'  >:(.  ?? drops ??

Thanks for asking.

It's really hurting in my ear where the infection is and radiating into my face, jaw, gums....hurts to chew/talk. Partner picked up the ear drops this morning that I've been prescribed.

I'm exhausted trying to work out what's causing what pain wise...

I got an inflamed gum 2 weeks ago where my wisdom tooth used be...

I'm worried it's a TMJ joint issue possibly causing pain too in that area of right side of face where all my current pain is? But I'm guessing

I've read so much about perimenopause causing all these issues, ear problems, infections, TMJ, oral health issues....that I'm in a total mess worrying 24/7........

I feel so out of control of my body now...is it perimenopause? Most things I get these days are....having had M.E/CfS for 30 years...I'm used to no one being able to help me or make me better as there is no cure.........and when I'm getting all these new symptoms now.....I feel powerless to work out why.....ad my body is so complex and I'm not your average healthy lady who's 'only' issue is perimenopause. It's so hard.

I'm dealing with so much. Having M.E, and not being able to nip to a dentist etc

When you tell medical professionals you think it's perimenopause related they look at you like you're an idiot. You try to explain but they dismiss it.

My partner/carer is busy dealing with his brothers recent sudden death. I can't bother him with my worries...he's at capacity and already feels guilty he has not been there as much for me but obvs he's going through a terrible time.

Really down  :(

Sorry to hear about the sudden death in your family.  Always a shock, even if it's expected  :foryou:  Tell him that he needs to focus on immediate family matters, there's no guilt required.

Interesting that the wisdom socket was inflamed.  Years++ after mine were removed, they would become sore then so painful that I was unable to eat for several days, always cyclical.  Can't remember where in the cycle though.  Some could have done a Thesis on my wisdom sockets!

A dentist would be able to diagnose TMJ issues.  If U R housebound an appt would make it difficult.  R U able to open/close your mouth without it locking?  If you do, how painful is the area affected?

Not many medics are aware of how hormonal upheaval can affect us  >:(.  Unless they live with a perimenopausal woman ;-).

Bless your heart for reaching out. I'm in bed here, alone as partner with his mum arranging funeral and someone there helps

Thanks for your kindness for my lovely man. He's amazing.

That's so interesting you had an issue with your wisdom tooth socket too and makes me think. I had mine removed 6 years ago, but the roots were left in (coronectomy) I was wondering if the roots were migrating or such like....NEVER had any issues with it in 6 years......and thought it incredibly weird it suddenly got all inflamed and infected looking...then thought....must be flipping perimenopause!!........

But I don't want to umbrella everything under that......its impossible to know though.....

But that has given me some comfort.

Jaw doesn't lock. I had TMJ issues on my left side 4 years ago. I got a night guard and it's left me with a horrid permanent loud crunching noise when I open my mouth. No pain or anything. I've just got used to the crunching noise.

Maybe the pain in right jaw/side of face is refered from ear? It's all the right side causing issues....I'll see how I get on and re evaluate.

Thank you for being so kind.

Referred pain can be a nuisance!

As we age muscles may recede so it is possible that the pain experienced in the socket may well be that:  teeth as the long bones require something to 'work upon' to keep the jaw healthy.  As oestrogen: the elasticity of the body: drops off, muscles may become lax and the body dry: inside and out.  It's The Change  >:(

I have probably asked B4 but menobrain here can't remember: what support do you get on a daily basis other than OH?

Thanks.

No other support at home except my partner. But that's fine and all I need.

I am in touch with gp, nurses, mental health team if I need.

So all bases are covered.

CLKD,

Sorry to bother you again.

Did you know your wisdom  tooth issue was hormonal.....or did you first do the multiple trips to dentist thinking there MUST be something wrong......to be told everything looks fine?

I'm really beginning to be convinced my issue is hormonal in my wisdom tooth socket AND my ears.....as never had issue before and rather coincidental I'm in perimenopause.

But if you say to a dentist it's hormonal....would they dismiss it like most medics do?

I'm SO OVER THIS. Just beside myself every day.

Thank you x

I never discussed the cyclical pain in the 3 wisdom tooth sockets, it was over 30 years later that I talked to our dental surgeon. He seems 2B aware of hormonal input and wished that he could have done the Thesis  ::).  1 was removed in the surgery where we lived at the time, the other 2 pulled out under GA in Swansea, 1981-ish ..... due to the way my roots crawl around.

It was pre-period to the point that I was unable to eat.  It was SO painful.  So yes, certainly hormonally linked.

Thank you so much for replying. Its very good of you.

I see.....I misunderstood  that  your issues were during your perimenopause or menopause.........but clearly, hormonal regardless.

All very interesting.

Thank you for your support. I'm hugely grateful x
