Help! Testosterone Bloods Too High
« on: September 14, 2023, 05:19:57 PM »

I've got to have my bloods done again as my GP is not happy with my high testosterone, the receptionist gave me my results over the phone as,
Testosterone (should be 0.1-1.4), mine is 3
Oestradiol is 318, no idea if that is high, low or ok.
Everything else in normal range, by that she meant liver, thyroid.

I know bloods fluctuate a lot so I'm hoping next week's test will be lower.
I'm only just starting to feel myself again and am not willing to give up on the testosterone.
I'm on Testogel, ust over 4 months, Oestrogel 3 pumps and Utrogestan almost 3 weeks after switching from Evorel 50 conti which I'd been on for 1 year. I was peri when I began HRT.

Has anyone else had high testosterone and stayed on it?

I'm getting a bit panicky as life before Testogel was fast becoming unbearable and I refuse to go back there. I'm still having some joint and muscle pain, but everything else is improving.

Thanks for any help or advice you may have

Hi Mabel, in order to really have an idea of how much 'free' testosterone you have, you really need to have your SHBG measured to measure your Free Androgen Index, ie the amount of testosterone that is not bound to this protein and therefore bioavailable.

So it is possible that while the T value on its own is quite high, if your SHBG also were high then your free testosterone could be quite low.
Your oestradiol value is ok.

Thank you for your response and help Laszla. The receptionist didn't mention SHBG so I will enquire about that. Thank you

I bet anything if you were under the care if a private meno clinic they wouldn't be worrying about a level of 3 x

I called the surgery and the receptionist said there was a sex hormone result, which was normal.
I've asked her to put a note for the GP asking that they look at SHGB in conjunction with the testosterone result.

I was under Newson's but am trying to switch to get testosterone via my GP. They were liaising with Newson's when I asked to be switched, with an increase, to Oestrogel and Utrogestan. So hopefully it will be Newson's who's advice is listened to re my testosterone.  Of course, if it is too high, I'll take their advice, but going by my symptoms I'm better than I have been in almost 2 years and I sure as hell am not going back to how I was LBT (life before testosterone!)

Mabel if you ask them for the SHBG number (and they have to give it to you) then you can just pop the numbers in to a FAI calculator online - there are loads and it's a very simple sum

I did ask if there was a number, but the receptionist had to go into the results further (she said she had to open them up) and as she didn't understand the numbers she said she wasn't comfortable or allowed to tell me them as she isn't medically trained. Fair enough I guess.
I'm going back on Tuesday for a repeat blood test so will ask the nurse when she takes the blood. I'll also request a copy of the results, I forgot to today.
Thanks for your help @Laszla

Well, I had to have a second testosterone blood test, which has come back at 1.8 down from 3, but it's clearly connected to where I am in my cycle, test me again when a bleed is due and it will be higher I'm sure.
Dr wants me to let my private meno specialist know the result. I'm not sure why she said that as the whole point was to stop using a private specialist and have it prescribed by my GP next time.  I'm so fed up with my GP not listening to what I say and what I've requested.

I will probably need to resign myself to going back to Newson Health when I need more Testogel.

It really shouldn't be such a battle. I'm feeling closer to normal, though still suffering with some effects, than I have done in years and despite my higher testosterone results I haven't grown a beard or penis, yet...

Give me strength!  ::)
