Testosterone.....
« on: August 10, 2023, 10:27:09 AM »

Hi,

I've been on HRT for about 5 years.  Started on Femoston and progressed to my current regime of 3 pumps of Oestrogel and 200mg of oral Utrogestan 14 nights out of 28. I'm 51. For the most part my current regime is going well. GP wants me to change to 100mg Urtrogestan continuously, may try this next month.

My main reason for posting is regarding my dry eyes.  I've been under the care of the eye hospital for over six months. No need for me to waffle on about this condition other than it has really had a very negative impact on my quality of life in so many ways.

The hospital have tried all sorts, the next step will be to permanently close the drainage holes for my eyes.

A lovely member of this forum messaged me a few months ago and mentioned testosterone. I find it all a bit confusing to say the least.

I currently take an array of supplements, seabuckthorn being one which seems to have alleviated lots of areas of dryness, just not my eyes.

When I googled this I do feel I have a number of symptoms currently that may align with low testosterone:

Severe dry eye syndrome
Low energy
Bladder weakness
Low sex drive

How would I go about exploring if testosterone is an option for me?  Is there any point in contacting my GP or are they unable to prescribe for women?

I've tried to broach the subject of HRT with the eye hospital but they seem purely focused (no pun intended!) on fixing my eye problem and not interested in the HRT side of things...

I really would appreciate any input.  I would have emailed Dr Currie but she is not accepting new enquiries at the moment.

I will more than happily approach a private specialist if this is the route I need to take?

Many thanks.

Type testosterone into the search box at the top of the site, and read the threads. Testosterone definitely helps with fatigue and sex drive, not sure about dry eyes but wouldn’t be surprised x

Thank you, yes I have had a look and read some of the threads.

I have just discovered that Newson Health do an online consultation purely to chat about adding testosterone so I might consider that....

Thanks again x

If you don’t want to pay you could ask your GP. Mine referred me to a specialist and once he said yes it’s on my notes and I can have it indefinitely now on the nhs. Alternatively, you could do a one off private consultation to get it.

Good luck x

It might be worth asking your gp first. Most will want to refer you to a meno clinic but there are a few who will prescribe themselves. The wait is over a year in my area. Also worth checking what the private clinic prescribes. It's usually androfemme that isn't available on the nhs so you'll need a private prescription each time. I don't have dry eyes but T helped me with your other symptoms. Good luck.

I really want testosterone but can already see hurdles and barriers from my GP. (Long story, long history of problems with them relating to HRT.) I was once prescribed it by meno clinic elsewhere in UK about 10 year ago but back then it seemed to make me spotty and a bit 'narky' so I stopped. I'd like to try again as things are different with me, 10 years on.

So, one can just book to see a meno specialist privately about testosterone?

Thank you all.

Perhaps I will send an econsult to my gp surgery and see what they say.

Clovie, I’ve no idea really, feels a bit odd to me that I am having to research and come up with solutions to my own health issues iyswim.

Looking at the Newson Health website it would appear that yes, you can just pay to talk to them about just testosterone with a view to them prescribing it.

Can you just ask your GP for testosterone without being on other HRT except local oestrogen?

Thanks Ali,   :)  and yeah, it does seem mad that we are all floundering around on the internet looking for solutions to our own health issues, regarding HRT.   Good luck!  :)

You can ask but unlikely it'll be prescribed. If you don't have sufficient oestrogen T gets converted to an androgen derivative.
