Feeling so low
« on: July 24, 2023, 09:42:23 AM »

Hello everyone

This is my first time posting on here so I am hoping that somebody may be able to offer me some support.

I am 49 and have been in full menopause now for the past 12 months or so (no period at all anymore). I was using the Evorel 50 patches which my GP has now increased to Evorel 75. My GP has also given me Utrogestan 100 to take on an evening.

I do struggle with anxiety and depression but have been taking Escitalopram 20mg for some time. The problem is that I have felt really low, especially the past couple of weeks  :'( I just can't seem to get myself out of this pretty dark place. I am constantly exhausted due to not sleeping well for a long time. I've actually stopped taking the Utrogestan as I honestly don't think it is helping but I have no real understanding of the impact that not taking it will have on my body and mind.

I am seeing a Menopause specialist this Wednesday, so I am hoping she will be a big help. Fingers crossed.

Anybody else feeling like this?

xx

Hello Jojo and welcome to the forum. I am very sorry to hear of how low you are feeling. Do you remember if you felt this way before taking utrogestan? The reason I ask is because it can cause very low mood in some people.

Did you feel okay on Evorel 50? If so you can stay on this dose.

Menopause can worsen anxiety and depression so I think it is really good you have reached out to us on here.

Morning.  It may be the HRT regime causing you to feel low.   I suggest writing a list to take to your appt. to discuss so that you don't forget to mention any problems.  Let us know how you get on.

Why did U begin HRT?  50 to 75 is a huge jump so your body/brain mayB upset !  Why did the GP suggest a hike in dose?

Hello Jojo

I am so sorry you 're having a difficult time. I think going to the menopause specialist on  Weds will be very beneficial.
I have been on patches for a year now and started on uteogestan in the beginning. Personally I did not get on with these and had a mirena coil fitted in its place. The progesterone part of hrt can be hard for many women to tolerate and may be an issue her for you. I would definitely encourage you to be very honest at your appt, and  I agree it's a good idea maybe write a few ' pointer ' notes of your symptoms and any questions you may have. It easy to forget all this an any appt!

Mood swings have been none not the worse parts of perimenopause for me,and unfortunately many women on this forum.  But it is very encouraging that you have posted on here, this forum is really big on support as well as practical advice. My moods are very much linked to my natural cycle, and I can get unbelievably severe moods and have begun a low dose of mitrazapine anti depressant to help with this.
Also it can freak the body out a bit altering a patch dose, some are sensitive to change. Again, like others I would as in your case, go from a 50, then cut a tiny bit off the 75 to give you about 62.5 and gradually built up to the full 75. Again, speak to your meno specialist.

Above all, as many remind me, we do come out of these dark places, and always post on here when you some virtual but or support. We all need that.

Take care

Thank you so much everyone for your advice and support.

I went to see the Menopause Specialist yesterday and came away feeling much more positive. She has changed me over to the Evorel Conti patch and also added an additional Oestrogen-only patch. Additionally, she has given me some Oestrogen cream that I need to pop down below (sounds delightful!).

All in all, I am feeling better. It certainly helped chatting to somebody who understood how I was feeling. It's made a big difference.

Oh that sounds a good appt. Glad you have a different regime to help you.
As for the cream.... Well that is one thing I could not be without!

I agree, just talking through things with someone makes a huge difference.  Nice to hear of a successful day.
