Am I losing it?
« on: July 22, 2023, 08:08:01 PM »

I have been having muscle and joint pain. A couple of years I was told I had osteoarthritis, I managed the pain with over the counter meds and gentle exercise which helped. I am 47 and now in perimenopause, the pain has got worse or I have become more aware of it. I feel like m losing it a bit, anxious and at times a bit paranoid. I have just started taking turmeric to see if it helps with the joints and muscles, has anyone else tried it with any success? HRT is not an option for me. Thanks xx

Nope.  Though we do have a thread 'doing stupid things'  ;)  :welcomemm:

As oestrogen levels drop muscles may become lax = aches and pains.  Over the counter meds can help.

Anxiety may become worse during peri-menopause, thoese years leading up to the menopause = literally the last monthly period.  Thought often we don't know we are there until at least 12-14 months after the last bleed.  Periods may wax and wane B4 we realise that they have gone.

However: symptoms may become troublesome.  Some find that keeping a mood/food/symptom diary of use to chart progress.  It gives us something to discuss with medics/Nurs practitioners.

Browse round. Make notes ;-). Ask away.

R U able to tell us why you are averse to HRT?   There are many ways of delivering medications which can make a huge difference to quality of Life.  Do read the 'bladder issues' and threads about vaginal atrophy.

Hi Cassie

To answer your question, yes, I take turmeric, and it definitely helps with my joints and muscles.  Definitely worth a try.

Hi,

I find Magnesium supplements (tablets or spray/oil) and Epsom salts baths help with the muscle aches/pain. Make sure you keep hydrated and keep your levels of minerals topped up e.g. magnesium/potassium.

Muscle pain (thighs) was one of my first menopausal symptoms though I didn't know it at the time. I know you said you can't take HRT but for me it alleviated it almost immediately.

Hope you find something to ease it.

That reminds me of deep rooted excruciating pains in the thighs, so painful that I couldn't even yell!  Eventually I worked out that because I spend a lot of time bending over cabinets in antique fairs, I had affected my posture.  Now I have to take care when browsing.

CKLD, family history and a genetic condition makes HRT too risky. GP agrees that lifestyle changes and supplements are sensible and said to see how it goes and go back if anything changes

There are several ways of delivering HRT so don't give up hope!  Osteo arthritis is often caused because the head is heavy so impacts all the way down the skeleton  ::)

What does your GP suggest?  I wonder whether speaking to a dedicated menopause specialist would be a way to go too.

Do read the 'bladder issues' and 'vaginal atrophy' threads ;- - make notes.  Let us know how you get on.

Thank you, I’ll look into it. You’re all so kind. I’ve stressed myself out so much worrying about symptoms I’ve now got itchy red patches on my scalp… I’ve had them before but understand this can be another gift from perimenopause 😫

Oh blimey, your pain sounds awful 😞 . Im glad HRT helped you. I’m going to get some magnesium to go with the menopause supplement I’m taking.

Hi

I don't know about turmeric, but I understand collagen and msm help joint pains.

If you decide to take any of these I would suggest collagen powder as opposed to tablets/capsules (and I think it's the bovine one for joint pains, a Google search will clarify).
MSM in powder form, a good one is Dr's Best. There is a way to check the quality of the powder, I cant remember exactly how you do it, but there's a youtube on it.
