Hi, I've been loitering for some time on here gleaning so much info from all you lovely ladies whom I must say are very knowledgeable re postmenopausal. I have VA and have been using over the counter moisturisers for a few months which have helped a bit, then I started spotting so contacted my doctor and she has prescribed ovestin cream. I'm only a week in with the cream, so have another week to go and then down to twice a week. On using the cream I get a slight burning sensation and it feels bunged up down there and it feels as if I can feel the cream working ( imagination?) when I get up in the mornings the cramping starts and it's usually gone by lunch time. The spotting has stopped but I'm getting side effects which apparently do stop after a few weeks usage once your body adjusts. I spoke to my doctor about the side effect ie cramping, sore nipples, very sore and itchy down below and some creamy yellowy discharge which I thought was thrush. My doctor (female) on discussing this seemed to dismiss my side effects and said side effects are very rare with ovestin she also prescribed Canastan cream for down there, I did try using the ovestin cream in that area but it made it worse. I have noticed a slight difference in that it feels plumpier ( is that a word ?) down there and I've more muscle strength in doing pelvic exercises. How long have your side effects lasted with using ovestin cream? Have you benefited long term using the ovestin cream?
Tia
Hello and welcome to the forum. I am so pleased you have been given Ovestin to help with your symptoms. I personally would ignore the advice to use for twice a week after the loading dose as this is not going to be enough for you while your symptoms are so bad. I use Ovestin every day and if I ever try to reduce it, my symptoms become worse.
It can sting to use VA treatment to begin with due to the skin being so sore. You may find it helpful to use emollient to act as a barrier for the skin. I was advised by a meno specialist to apply emollient before a shower, wash it off in the shower, then reapply some to act as a barrier for the skin.
I too notice my skin became plumper after using Ovestin.
Perhaps you could get a swab test done to confirm if you do actually have thrush.
Not everybody has side effects using Ovestin. I remember stinging when I first used it but apart from that I did not have any other side effects. I mix a little Ovestin cream with Yes VM to apply to the outer area. I find this makes it easier for me to apply the Ovestin that way. For applying it internally, I put Yes VM on the Ovestin applicator.
