Can low oestrogen cause paranoia?
« on: July 15, 2023, 08:39:44 PM »

I currently take one pump oestrogel and have happily managed on it for nearly two years. I am 58 and post menopausal. I have dropped from variously 3 to 2 over the years.
I now have viscous paranoia and wake during the night, I also feel my brain fog is returning.
I stupidly figured that having been through, what I considered the worst, that I wouldn’t need to up my dose of oestrogel again.
Could it be that I am too low and it’s causing my symptoms to reappear?
Has anyone else had to up their dosage later on through their menopause journey?
I thought I was through with the bloody M word and had carried on taking the Oestrogel for all its other advantages.
My doctor is clueless so would love to hear from other women who may have experience of this.

I'm peri and about 3/4 months on hrt. I can say that paranoia was a big concern for me. Seems to have settled a bit now but definitely hormones.

I am so sorry to hear you are having to deal with this. I would say low oestrogen can cause a person to have low mood, anxiety etc. I think it is worth trying to increase your oestrogen to see if it helps. From reading posts on this forum, postmeno women sometimes do need to increase their oestrogen.

More experienced members will reply to you. :)

I would increase oestrogen too and see if it improves. Low oestrogen can give you mood swings and anxiety but I'm not sure about paranoia. I am probably meno and have had to increase twice so far, every time I try to reduce my anxiety and insomnia returns so although they say you need less post meno it hasn't been my experience.

I thought that you had another thread on a similar topic  :-\  :-\  ......... if so, keeping to the same one means that responses won't become lost.

hello
yes I did. I’ve canned the Testosterone for now though - I’m trying to eliminate symptoms as they come along. I’ve been searching for a long time for a link between paranoia and testosterone /testogel and so far come up with nothing so I’m going to try and increase my oestrogen by one pump and see if that works. If it does, I’ll reintroduce the Testogel. It’s so difficult to navigate all changes and try and work out what’s the culprit. I have no stress at all (since retiring and kids being adult and settled) so I’m guessing it has to be hormonal.
honestly ten years on ( including peri) I thought i’d be done with this sh*t 🥲

It’s probably too much for you. I didn’t have paranoia but did get irritable and angry if I took T every day. I experimented and now take it 3 x per week: Mon/Weds/Fri and I’m fine with that.

Also, if you’re only on 1 pump of gel I think the balance between O & T is out, and you should up it to 2 pumps. Oestrogen is nature’s Prozac and shouldn’t give you any negative symptoms but should only make you feel better.

Hope this helps x

Oh my word- THANK YOU 🙏🏼
you’ve no idea how much this helps.
Well, I’ve now upped the gel to two pumps and i’ll stay like this (oestrogel only) for a week and then try the
three
times a week Testogel (1/8 each day). Testogel makes me snap like feck at
my OH but we have sex so that’s the pay off 🤐. Hopefully I’ll start to get the balance right

Paranoia can certainly be caused by hormonal upheaval.  I suggest that you ask the question at the National Association for Pre-menstrual Syndrome [NAPS] as Dr Dalton did many investigations as to which part of a woman's cycle is likely to cause rages and paranoia etc..

Dr Dalton represented girls in Court where there had been incidences of attacks by these women during certain phases of the cycle.

Is this something that has been under control previously?
