Age limit for Mirena?
« on: June 16, 2023, 08:24:34 AM »

My new HRT specialist wants me to come off progesterone. He suggests the mirena coil or hysterectomy 😲 I've had 2 coils before, both very painful to put in, which he says if done properly will not hurt. The thing is I'm 66 now and I can't really see me wanting to have a coil replaced in my 70's. I wonder if there are any more mature ladies here with experience to share?

What is the reason he wants you to stop progesterone? The Mirena is also progesterone so I wonder what he means by that. If the coil was painful to put in then I would not agree to that.

Because the risk of breast cancer is lower with the coil than pills. I am on a high dose of sandrena gel and still experiencing intermittent breakthrough bleeding. Scan shows small fibroids. He really favours keyhole hysterectomy but I'm not interested in such a drastic op.

Is it possible to ask for a second opinion? Does breast cancer run in your family?

I am sure somebody knowledgeable will be along soon. It is quiet on here today. :)

Have you considered Utrogestan? Its a bio identical hormone and not a progestegin, I believe it is a safe form of Progesterone, esp if used vaginally?

I was given utrogestan for one month when my regular progesterone was not available. This corresponded to the beginning of breakthrough bleeding.

If you are on a high dose of oestrogen were you given 200mg or utrogestan per night on a continuous basis?  This may take time to settle so a month may not have been long enough to trial it.

Hello Still searching,
I’m 69 years old and been on HRT for 26 years.  Never had had a problem until I went on utrogestan 100.  After 9 months I started bleeding and had a transvaginal scan which showed a lining of 11mm.  After a hysteroscopy, which thankfully came back ‘all clear’, the gynaecologist suggested I go back to a sequential regime.  At least I know where I am with regards to a bleed!

100mg per day. I'm on 2mg sandrena gel daily

I had a transvaginal scan, lining was 10mm and 3 small fibroids. I don't want to go back to having periods but I would like to know if anyone of my age has experience with a coil.
