Stopping HRT
« on: June 05, 2023, 12:05:59 PM »

i am new to this group, but could do with opinions, i was on HRT for just over 5 months when i had a bleed for 6 days, i contacted my gp who sent me for scans this showed a small fibroid which i have had for a while, i've been told to stop the HRT now, this is not good as now i'm back to not sleeping due to hot flushes, last night was every hour., continual during the night, i cannot get a new appointment for 3 weeks, i work long hours, i have no history of any issues before, this morning i have decided to start my HRT again as i do not want to go back to the way i was before i started HRT.
i have tried all other remedies to no avail.

Hrt can make fibroids grow but as long as the lining's thin I'd have done the same in your shoes. Perhaps you can discus it's removal at your appointment? Some doctors just don't understand how bad your life can be without it. Is it possible the bleed was from your own cycle?

I've not had a proper period for a few years due to having a coil, I'm hoping to get an interview for a job I've applied for but I'm dreading it if I do as I would be a mess of hot flashes, I have a 40 min drive to work I need a full nights sleep, the male doctor I spoke to over the phone about my results was not understandable how debilitating it can be, I've managed to get an appointment with a female doc at my surgery but it's not until the 29th of june😥

Hi Paulina,

I had exactly the same issue when starting HRT. I was fine for a few months and then I had irregular, heavy bleeds. I went for a scan and they found fibroids. The male gynaecologist told me I couldn’t take HRT, stop immediately and I quote ‘go home, start drinking wine and tell your husband…god help you….for a few years’. I was furious.

My husband immediately got on the phone and made me an appt with a menopause specialist and drove me there. The female specialist was also furious on my behalf and completely debunked the gynaecologists opinion. She upped my progesterone from 11 days per month to 14 and I never had  an irregular bleed since. She also recommended a Mirena coil, which I now have and all bleeding has stopped. If you had a coil before and got on with it, then why don’t you have another one fitted as your progesterone part of HRT and just have oestrogen gel or patches for other symptoms. My fibroids are still very much there, but as they aren’t causing a bleed anymore they don’t matter.

I hope you do continue with HRT if it’s relieving your menopausal symptoms.

Best wishes,
Ermin
