Mood swings off scale and OMG irritability.
« on: May 17, 2023, 09:09:26 AM »

I’m suffering with mood swings like never before in my life. I get irritated at the little things that never used to bother me. I notice more like my senses are heightened, someone chewing food the other side of the room now sounds a lot louder and it bugs me. Is this just me or is this normal? Will it settle at all or will I always be irritated easily now?

Hi Natalie,

Mad mood swings are my biggest problem. May be worth noting if there is a pattern to their intensity. Whilst my moods and definitely the  irritability are there all the time, mine are very much cyclical, and far far worse prior to when a period should be due. I am peri and in hrt. There are things that can help.

Are you on hrt yourself? Noticed any patterns to your moods?  Unfortunately, for some, pms and peri can worsen moods.

What hrt are you on if any? Progesterone is not always easy for some to tolerate, for instance so a different form may benefit. upping estrogen with g.p guidance may help too.

Am sure many will be along with suggestions. Just know you are not alone in these feelings, we can understand and support.

Hi SarahT.
No I’m not on any medication at all. I’m waiting for a hospital appointment with the gynaecologist to confirm what the drs have diagnosed. The dr has said they won’t treat me until the hospital have seen me due to other heath issues and it’s a long waiting list.

I do feel alone in the fact that no one in my life really understands.
Family at home just think I’m moody, hormonal and don’t want to be around me. Arguments start and I shut off from life, I don’t eat, and if I do I’m sick.
I get nauseous, physically sick after I eat, and suffer with back pain a week or two prior to when I’m due on.
I’m currently going 46-67 days between periods.

Drs say from blood test results that I’m not ovulating any more but the terms they use are so jargon to me just wish someone could explain things simpler.
The brain fog is something else I have to endure.
I didn’t start to think I was developing dementia early, I know 37 is young but it’s not unheard of. I know now from research this is not the case but it does have me worrying if I’m like this now what will I be like at the end of it.

I'm sorry things are so difficult, it's something most of us can identify with. Perhaps print off the 'advice for husbands' pinned post and give it to them to read. The way you're reacting isn't your fault and they need to understand this.

I can understand that all the info you are trying to take in sounds jargon to you. There  is a lot going on in your life and you must feel all over the  place.

When you have appts, can someone to with you? a second pair of ears can help listen and make notes. A medical person can say one thing, and when you are still trying to process that bit, it's easy to miss the rest they are saying to you.

have you had a good browse in this forum? Not just the posts, but all the info there is on what exactly peri and meno is all about and some of the terms used. That may help you. Also a search to find specifics.

For a .lot of us this whole hormonal upheaval can be overwhelming. And patience is something a lot of us understandably struggle with. It must be very hard for you having to wait so long for a gynae appt whilst having these symptoms.

My first post on here was because quite simply I thought I was going mad. I agree with Sheila to ask others close to you to look at the advice for husband's (applies to anyone!) I often think of I cannot understand what is happening or how I feel, how can I expect anyone else to? I hope they can reach a level of understanding to support you. It's hard...my own moods are completely irrational at times.

But do be assured probably everyone reading your post on here does understand how you feel. So you may not feel quite so alone.

We have a thread 'noise' here somewhere.

U would probably be better off being referred to a dedicated menopause clinic as Gynaes/GPs often have little idea about HRT - so will stick to what is written in the box whereas a menopause specialist might be more prepared to experiment to find out what suits each individual.
