How to compare oral vs transdermal doses of Estrogen?
« on: April 28, 2023, 06:31:00 AM »

I'm interested to know how to compare the quantity of Estrogen you get in transdermal vs oral Estrogen. I know transdermal doesn't have the first pass effect and that's why doses are lower, and I also know you can look at comparison charts for dose information - I can see for example that Louise Newsom says a 1mg tablet is comparible to a 50mcg patch - but I wondered what the science/calculation was behind those comparison amounts.

I'm basically just curious to know for sure if my current dose of a 25mg patch is lower or higher than the dose of Estrogen in the Zoely contraceptive pill, which is 1.5mg of Estradiol, both as hemihydate.

Page 3 gives you equivalent doses.

1mg oral tablet is equivalent to a 25 patch. So a 25 patch is a lower dose of oestrogen compared to a 1.5mg pill. But these are “rough” comparisons.

Thanks Dotty - that's interesting as Louise Newsom gives a 1mg tablet as equivalent to a 50mg patch

In recent publications by DR Newson she doesn't include a comparison for oral HRT.

The document that I sent you the link to is from The BMS and it's the one that specialists / doctors use.

Glad you asked this as I was wondering the same thing ……. I was previously taking contraceptive pill and was wanting to compare the amount of oestrogen in that to the HRT I’m now taking  …… however the pill I was on says 20 mg which seems way higher than those mentioned above ???? Is this because it’s a different form of oestrogen perhaps ? Or have I missed something ??

Mercilon contains 20 micrograms. Oral hrt starts at 1 mg ( milligram). So there is less oestrogen in Mercilon but it is a synthetic oestrogen.

I think that’s right …

Yes, synthetic Estrogen is much, much stronger than Estriadol so unfortunately can't be compared. The Estrogen in Zoely is the same type as in HRT, so easier to compare  :)
