Had surgery-stopped vagifem
« on: March 19, 2023, 02:24:11 AM »

Hi everyone!

I had total hip replacement on March 2 and due to the risk of a blood clot because of the surgery, I was advised by my gynecologist to stop the vagifem 6 weeks prior to the surgery as there is also a slight risk with its use.

I was using the vagifem for my bladder control as it was quite bad. I have been using the vagifem for a year and I didn't realize how much the vagifem was helping because my bladder control is terrible right now.  My gynecologist has recommended I can restart it once I have hit the 6 week mark post surgery.  4 more weeks to go!

Oh dear, poor you! What risk did the gynaecologist perceive from using Vagifem?
I hope you are recovering well from the hip surgery.

Clinically was there a risk of a blood clot?

It's a gynae with obviously no idea about VA!  I wasn't aware that gynaecologists were a) responsible for advice about blood clots and b) he/she probably didn't liaise with the Orthopaedic Surgeon nor the anaesthetist?

In your situation I would ring my gynae 2 tell him/her that I will be re-starting.  The longer the condition is left the more uncomfortable it may become.  As well as asking the GP for an appt with a dedicated menopause clinic.

Hopefully you are getting physio to help with mobility.  Years ago all specialists would get together to discuss a patient who may have several conditions, so that everyone, including the patient, knew what was 'best'!  It doesn't seem that there is any joined-up thinking in the NHS these days.

It will be 6 weeks after my hip replacement next Thursday, so I will restart the Vagifem then.  I ended up getting a UTI 3 weeks after my surgery and my bladder control has gone down the drain!  Vagifem does help!

Was a urine sample sent to a Lab., it may have been a bug collected whilst in hospital!

I would start, a week won't make any difference  :-\
