Will my mental sharpness ever come back?
« on: March 31, 2023, 10:54:02 AM »

Like a lot of women I see posting on here, for me, the symptom that bothers me most is the mind fog.

I used to be so mentally sharp. I was bursting with ideas and had all the energy and drive I needed to execute them. Working 7 days week and late into the night used to be fun. I loved being productive, putting my mind to work and successfully finishing projects.

Lately, it's like all of that is just gone.

I feel like I've gone from firecracker to burst balloon over the last few years (I'm in peri).

The HRT (oestogel & utrogestan) is helping, I'm not as forgetful as I was, but the mental sharpness isn't back. I also lack the drive to push myself physically in exercise as much as I used to.

I just want to know if there's any hope of it returning. It'd make me so happy to get that mental agility and "oompf" back.

Or if there's no hope, if this is something I just need to accept about getting older, I'd rather know.

Does anyone here have experience of feeling like I do now who got back to where they were pre-meno?

I imagine it is different for each person. Perhaps it could help to take it slowly rather then to keep hoping to get back to how you were pre meno. I hope that does not sound dismissive, I just would not want you making yourself stressed with waiting to be how you were. I have days were my brain fog is not so bad but my memory is truly appalling and I cannot imagine it getting better for myself. I am not even sure if mine is meno related any more as everything just blurs.

Thanks Flossieteacake. I do loads less than I used to, it doesn't help unfortunately.

This is not burnout. Resting doesn't bring it back.

It' s not so much the doing lots of things I'm missing, but the mental sharpness to be able to.

Hi Pineappletop
I found adding in testosterone helped with mental sharpness. That said some days are definitely better than others, but I do think it has an impact and is definitely worth a try x

How is your libido? If it's low or absent I would try testosterone, it helped my motivation though not mental sharpness. If libido is low it's very likely testosterone is low, if not it would be better to have a blood test as adding it when you don't need it isn't a good idea. My brain fog is much better than it was but I don't have the mental sharpness I had before. My hrt has been optimal for a couple of years so it's highly unlikely it's going to improve now.

Hi pineapple,

I recently posted about an interview I saw with dr. Lisa mosconi who is a neuroscientist and she said that during peri the brain changes significantly, giving you the symptoms but that the brain adapts, which is the reason the symptoms go away. She is an expert in the female brain, so I believe her. I’m peri like you and I have the same as you, I just have less mental and physical energy than before, I feel old not 47! I am considering taking testosterone too as many ladies here love it and it is said to boost energy, mood and libido.
I hope that makes you feel better. I know many women in their sixties and seventies who have more energy and do more than me! so I do think it’s just a peri thing. Also it sounds like you had loads of get up and go before peri and if that is your baseline then I suspect you will return to something like that. X

That's good to hear. I do intend to try it as soon as I can. Hope you see further improvements and have more and more better days. :)

Hi Pineapple.
That is the first thing I noticed coming back once I started the T. It was also very quick, practically within days but of course we are all different and some ladies don’t notice much difference for quite a few months. X

That's great to hear - certainly gives me hope! Thanks again. x

Thanks Katherine. I'll look up your post - sounds very interesting.

That's a good point about looking at older women who are out there functioning at top level! Let's hope we can be a generation offering even more examples (and hope) to women going through this stage in the future.

Best of luck to you. I'd love to hear your experiences with testosterone, if you're comfortable sharing them. Will keep an eye out for your posts. x

Thank you so much pineapple. If and when I try testosterone, I will definitely report back. Good luck to you too xxx
