Hi

I’m 62, menopaused over 10 years ago.  During this time I’ve experienced symptoms which include emotional instability, ie I cry a lot, low energy, mood and motivation, poor sleep quality and easily irritated. In the last year I have started taking Sandrena, Utrogestan and testogel, with some success, and am still working on getting the balance right with the help of a very knowledgeable doctor, some symptoms have reduced.

What I still notice is that despite taking the constant doses, ie same amounts everyday, my symptoms seem to follow a pattern of a menstrual cycle, ie they peak for approx 1 week once a month and I feel okish outside of this time frame, I feel like I’m on a roller coaster.

Just wondering if anyone else experiences a “cycle”.

Thanks in advance for your insights / experience.

I think it is quite usual for some to experience a 'cycle'.

Hi annc

 :welcomemm:

As that you are that long post-menopause then you will not likely be experiencing a natural hormonal cycle especially at your age, so there is likely to be another explanation for what you are experiencing! I don't know what it is though!

The aim for HRT is to feel better more of the time on it than off it, so if this is occurring and overall your negative symptoms have decreased then great!

Some women react negatively to continuous progesterone - it is a sedative and can make women feel fatigued, headachey, lethargic, depressed etc. I feel groggy when on it and can't wake up - not at all like my normal self! Again, if you are OK on it then good!

Thank you both for your kind and helpful replies, it’s good to know that I’m not the only one. I’m finally accepting that I may not achieve “perfection” ie no symptoms at all, but so long as they are reducing, I’ll take that.

Day at a time 🤗

Hi annc,

If bleeding is what you mean by monthly cycle then it can only be caused by HRT.  Once in postmeno, the monthly cycle should not contunue as far as I'm concerned.

As far as I'm concerned once in postmenopause then that should be the end of the matter.  Espiacially, 10 years after the last period.

What I believe happens in postmenopause is that the hormones reach a very low level.  These hormones then stabilise so I don't understand this cycle thing.

I wish I could understand this too.
Since being on evorel conti I get a monthly bleed with all the symptoms that go with it.
I had a blood test to check my estrogen levels and they were within perfect range.
Ime guessing it must be the progesterone part of the patch that is making me bleed monthly.
But why! I don't understand 😕

This is one of those under reported things which will eventually be researched and found to be quite true for many women. I definitely have a kind of 'cycle' each month (moods headache etc) and I am 5-6 years post meno. We still produce residual amounts of oestrogen after menopause - fat cells produce it and the adrenals do to. Progesterone drops to nothing as I understand it.

My osteopath said that SO many women she sees describe this happening - and my own mum has monthly hot flushes at 76!!

The only issue I have is anxiety and low mood.  I don't believe I still have a cycle. A cycle to me means that hormones are fluctuating and, for women in their prime, it includes ovulation.  If oestrogen hits a very low level then it should be stable. I can't imagine that it can still be fluctuating in postmenopause.

I'm 59 and have been post-menopausal since I was 54 and on continuous HRT for three and a half years now.

I have definitely still felt some kind of cycle.

There are weeks when for no good reason I find it hard to sleep or feel irritable and flat or put on a few pounds in weight. Fortunately, as I said, this is lessening, but it was there. Last blast from the ovaries, I reckon.
