Private clinics - recommendations - Newson - over 60
« on: March 10, 2023, 11:04:06 AM »

Hello,
I hope this is the right place for this. Looking at the Newson clinic - there are so many options for online appointments! Does anyone have any recommendations for particular docs there, specifically for older women/looking at starting HRT over 60? And/or with recurrent UTI issues.

Hello cjo and welcome to the forum. I am sure somebody will be along to answer your question but I just wanted to tell you it is very likely you have vaginal atrophy. One of the symptoms is the feeling of having a UTI. The treatment for this is localised oestrogen which you will be able to get from your GP while you are waiting to see a specialist. If you would like to know more about vaginal atrophy you can always enter it into the search bar on here. :)

Morning - as Flossieteacake suggests, do read the 'bladder issues' thread as well as anything to do with vaginal atrophy.  As oestrogen levels drop so the body may become dry: inside and out, including the vaginal area.  Appropriate treatment is available from your GP, you don't need an exam or blood tests.

MayB ring the Newson Clinic and discuss your requirements?  They will also be able to tell you how long the waiting list might be.

Let us know how you get on?

Hello
Thanks for this. Yes sorry should have said, this is when topical oesteogen on its own hasn't been enough on its own to solve the problem. Other issues too and feeling HRT would help but GP etc not wanting to try it due to age...so wondering if anyone had experience, of being over 60, at the clinic, in case there are any particular recommendations :) Waiting list doesn't seem too long, just a lot of choices of people to see.

HRT should not be a problem at any age!  GPs need to keep up.  As long as a full history is taken and any contra-indications understood, HRT should be considered.  After all it doesn't need to be for ever though many women are reluctant to give up a regime that works.

HRT can protect heart and bones.

Which VA treatment R U using and how often? Some ladies require nightly insertion in order to keep symptoms under control, although others manage with less each week.  As well as using 'sylc' or 'yes' moisturisers around the other labia to keep the whole are soft and less itchy.

Make a list of the symptom/s which you would like to ease first and do ring the Clinic for advice.  Let us know.

There is one lady i can think of on here who may be along soon.
There are a lot of doctors at Newsons to choose from.  We looked for our daughter but didn't go ahead.  Thought what do you do here get out a pin !

https://gynae-expert.co.uk/  Anne Henderson Menopause Consutlant/Specialist.  She is brilliant and really lovely.  She offers telephone or video appointments too.  Really knowledgeable, easy to talk to and really knows her stuff.  I am 70 and on HRT and her help and advice has been invaluable to me.

My GP initially refused me at age 63, but when I insisted I couldn't cope with flushes and VA, he agreed to refer me to my local NHS Menopause clinic within a BMI hospital.
I saw a consultant there who put me on HRT straight away, gel and utrogestan combi regime. The consultant wrote to my GP who then put it on repeat prescription. I am no longer under the clinic since it shut down in lockdown and I never got called back again, so my GP just seems to go with whatever I ask for now!

Good luck x

There is no longer an age limit for hrt on the nhs so you should be able to get it via your gp. Your gp should also be able to prescribe appropriately for VA. There can be differences, the nhs tends to think when you've been without oestrogen for some time you should start on a low dose. Newson doctors tend to use a higher dose and some people have had problems because of it. My advice would be to start on 25mcg (or 1 pump gel) whatever they prescribe. Sorry, can't advise on which doctor but I think they pretty much sing from the same hymn sheet anyway.

Thanks so much all. Interesting to know Newson sometimes prescribe higher, and if other clinics would be recommended for this reason? And if anyone does have any specific docs they've seen there that have helped- particularly if over 60 - would love to know
