Author Topic: Sister had breast cancer - how do I assess my risks if I go onto HRT?  (Read 504 times)

I feel quite lost. I was on HRT. I came off when my sister got breast cancer, just because it felt prudent to do so. She's tested negative for BRCA gene.

But I've since been told my osteopenia has worsened to osteoporosis in one site. HRT would help to maintain bone.

I go around and around about the risks. I need guidance about where and what I can read about those risks. Can anyone advise what I can do to find out?

Would it be worth me emailing Dr Currie?

My sister had breast cancer 3 years ago and had chemo and the lump removed.
BRCA gene negative and the cancer was not a estrogen dependant cancer. I'm only on local estrogen but would never stop taking it as it's just not an option, my life would be ruined without it.
What did your doctor advise?

Quality of Life?  Also a question to Dr Currie won't go amiss.

What did they tell your sister about hrt? If nothing can she go back to the specialist to ask? I think the risk increases if it's an oestrogen dependent one. If you contact Dr Currie the more you can tell her the more accurate the answer will be.
Given the certainty of osteoporosis or the possibility of BC personally I'd take the risk but of course it's a decision only you can make.
