Utrogestan side effects varying by month?!
« on: January 24, 2023, 05:57:55 PM »

Hello all,

I posted back in December how surprised I was that my first 12 days of 200mg oral Utrogestan were so symptom free and I obviously spoke too soon!

To give you a bit of history, I started on the gel, then switched to Everol 50 patches at the beginning of December which are incredible - hot flushes gone, sleeping 8 hours a night. Felt amazing! 12 days of Utrogestan over Xmas was fine, yes I felt a bit tired and groggy the first few days but that passed. The withdrawal was ok too - a 2 day bleed on day 4 of stopping that was no trouble at all.

Now this month is another story! I’m on day 7 of Utrogestan orally and my sleep is shot to pieces, I’m severely bloated and have felt nausea on and off and acid reflux. I tried taking it 3 hours after food, instead of two, but it made the acid reflux worse and no difference to poor sleep etc.

My question is, is it normal for Utrogestan side effects to vary so much? Was I just lucky in my first month? I’d have thought I’d have had lower estrogen at that early stage and the side effects could have been worse?

I’m debating whether to try the tablets vaginally tonight but I’m such a chicken doing things that I know my GP would disapprove of (she said strictly oral only).

Should I try 200mg vaginally which seems to be the recommended dose according to BMI? I’m so scared of making my symptoms even worse! Has anyone switched to 200mg vaginally and found symptoms to improve? I know I won’t know unless I give it a go - I guess I’m just looking for a bit of reassurance. I can totally see how easy it would be to give up but I cannot give up the lovely Everol which stopped my night sweats every 20 mins and have given me my life back!  :)

Quick update - I used 200mg ustrogestan vaginally last night at 9.30pm when I was feeling tired and then lay awake until 5am! The tiredness I had on going to bed quickly faded and I just felt awake. No other side effects at all. So strange. I guess all I can do is push on with taking them orally for the next 6 days until I finish, so I at least get some sleep, and then decide whether to continue or try something else as I can’t concentrate at work with lack of sleep. I’m so frustrated Utrogestan doesn’t seem to suit me.  :(

Hi Dotty, thanks for replying. No I haven’t taken it in the morning. Actually my husband asked this morning whether I should just take the next dose now on the basis it will likely keep me awake and then I may sleep better tonight? I’m also wondering about reducing to 100mg vaginally and seeing if that helps? Trial and error I guess! I feel a bit more optimistic now I’ve had a cup of tea. I just need to work out the right dose at the right time x

Mine varies from month to month. Sometimes it is so awful I have to stop the course at about day 9, other months almost nothing, other months somewhere in between .

I find it's very much worse when I'm producing my own progesterone as well, perhaps the same thing so happening to you. It also keeps me awake at night and dopey in the day. I started on evorel sequi and this progestogen didn't give me any symptoms, I had to change because I developed an allergic reaction to the glue. Utro is supposed to be the best because it's body identical but you may find something else suits you better.

I'm not progesterone intolerant but my reaction to Utrogestan used to vary from month to month from bad to very bad.   One year I only managed 20 x 100mg vaginal capsules in total because they were triggering my migraines.

Like others on here have said, it would sometimes start off OK then I would rapidly go downhill from about day 3.

The progesterone I use now is nothing like that fortunately.

This thread has been timely for me. I started the utro on Monday and within 24 it has felt like someone is scraping my womb lining out. No bleeding but awful, awful sore pain,24/7. I haven't had a bad month like this for a while.

Hi I am new here. I have been on Utrogestan 100mg daily and everol 50 patches for 3 months. For the last 2 months I have suffered vulva burning, treated for urine infections twice, pain in perinium, blisters that come and go on the labia (seen a gynaecologist who told me to come back in 3 months and if still present have biopsy). At witts end.
Could this be due to Utrogestan. Started HRT because of anxiety and sleep problems, brain fog and dementia prevention. My low mood has improved but all the vaginal issues are stopping me sleeping, and increasing anxiety. I had vaginal dryness before starting HRT, but none of the other vaginal issues.
Help please.

Hello Sam and welcome. Are you on any locialised oestrogen? Your symptoms sound like vaginal atrophy which is a very horrid but common condition. You may also like to buy vaginal moisuriser. Yes and Sylk are popular ones.

With the blisters it sounds like the skin is irritated. You could stop the ultrogestan to see if it helps. Perhaps a chat to your GP about trying a different progesterone is an idea.

Flossieteacake, thanks for your reply 😊. I have tried Vagifem, which I thought may have caused the blistering and Ovestin which helped initially and then seemed to sting.was using Yes but again gave some initial relief then continued to wane. Consequently, I stopped using all creams/moisturisers to let things settle. But I have constant heat and sensitivity in the vulva and labia with urethra twinges (sorry if this is too much info) and kidney feeling tight/sensitive. I am super aware of any sensation because of fear of how awful things have been and could cause the blistering again.
Has anyone else had the vulva and labia blisters? It’s s Not an STD!
That is why I think it could be linked to Ultrogestan. Any advise on progesterone alternatives?

Nothing is too much information on here so do not worry about that.

What I notice with VA is, at first things can sting as the skin is so sore. Often then people try a different treatment and are unsure which one is giving side efrects. With Ovestin it can help to mix it with a little vaginal moisuriser before applying to the outer area. With any treatment I find it helps to use daily while symptoms are bad. It does take time to see improvement.

With an alternative to ultrogestan here is a link

Hi Sam

 :welcomemm:

I use utrogestan vaginally for 12 days x 200 mg every 5-6 weeks,. I find when I am on the progesterone phase of my cycle I get an irritated bladder - have to get up in the night, and also often itchiness in between the labia - of course nothing bad like you describe but just to say it can have an irritant effect. There is no way that I would want to take it this way daily. Have you considered taking it orally for a couple of months and see if that helps clear up the unpleasant skin condition? You could then use other products to try to alleviate vaginal dryness.

Thank you Hurdity and Flossieteacakes for your replies. I think I will come off the Utrogestan for a week and see how I feel. I will update then. (I know I can’t take Oestrogen without progesterone as I have a womb, and I understand that progesterone role in keeping the lining of the womb thin)
Thanks again for the advice. It’s good to know your not alone.
