« on: January 21, 2023, 11:57:51 AM »

Anyone else have itchy skin  mostly arms and legs that keeps them awake at night.driving me mad!
I have no rash and my skin isn't dry.
Had it when i was perimenopausal for a while. It has returned im now 7 years post.
Sometimes so bad I get bruises from scratching.Seen Gp several times just say moisturise but skin isn't dry at all.
Had bloodtest all normal.Gp  wants to refer to skin clinic but there's nothing on my skin! They also don't believe it's menopausal

Hello and welcome to the forum. I had the itching you describe when my oestrogen was low. Are you taking HRT?

Which blood tests did your GP ask for?

As oestrogen levels drop the body may become dry: inside and out = itchiness all over.  GPs should be aware  >:(.   >:( Deep in the ears, eyes, scalp, vagina, between the toes, across the shoulders .......... mayB ask for HRT?

Thanks for replying, they tested lots of things.kidney, liver hb,thyroid .diabeties.Didn't do hormone one
It's mostly my limbs and neck
I am  7 years post menopausal never had hrt.
I am considering getting a specialist GP in menopause as never found them supportive at my practice.
How do you find a list of GPS or clinics that specialises?

hi Joannemt

I have found the simplest thing to keep itching under control is antihistamines.
I don't buy expensive ones, usually buy loratadine from the poundshop.

You can find a menopause specialist in your area by searching on the British Menopause Society website.

Hi you shouldn’t need to pay a private specialist.

Ask your GP for transdermal oestrogen ( gel or patch ) and Utrogestan. x

Yes, I have very dry, fragile itchy skin now and have now developed eczema because of this and it’s caused by my low Estrogen.  In the meantime whilst you see are waiting to see someone can you use some ointments/ moisturisers like zeroderm, hydromol, cetraben, and use it as a soap substitute in the shower also. It’s really awful on top of the other severe menopausal symptoms.

A couple of years ago i started getting the most intensely annoying itch on the sole of one foot. It kept me awake at night and I was scratching it until the underside of my foot was red. Dr's were baffled. They ruled out things like athlete's foot, eczema etc. tried all sorts of anthistimines, creams and pills, nothing worked Then one dr said to try a menthol cream- said it had worked for patients before. It was brilliant - immediate and long lasting cooling effect. I looked up the ingredients and now I make my own. Dead simple as it's just menthol crystals in an aqueous cream- cheap as chips and it works.

tnx for that info violetbat.  I also wake with one rough heel scratching the other, my main peri symptom was itchy insteps: as soon as I took off my socks and stepped into my evening bath the insteps would itch++.  As would my back from neck downwards, a gentle scratch by DH would ease that.  A drop in oestrogen?
