Constant Cough, Sore Throat and Runny Nose
« on: January 13, 2023, 10:09:51 AM »

Hello ladies.

The above virus seems to be doing the rounds and it is unusual in that goes away but then reappears. My husband has had this cold on and off since before Christmas and he finally saw a GP yesterday who told him that he is seeing many patients with the same symptoms.  The GP believes that the virus isn't clearing completely and people are re infecting themselves.

My husband was prescribed antibiotics and a nasal spray and some friends have also been given ABs. I have similar symptoms and now wondering if I should see the GP as well.

I just wondered if any of you ladies have had the same experience? If so you are definitely not alone.

Wishing you all well.

I know a lot of people who’ve had this.  Hot sweats and nausea are 2 other symptoms.  All have tested for covid but all been negative

Hello again ladies.

I have finally had enough of feeling so rubbish and I am trying to get a doctor's appointment. I still have a bit of a cough but the phlegm in my throat is constant and now my ears are hurting plus I feel fatigued all the time.

I also wonder if Ulcerative Colitis or hypothyroidism are contributing to how I feel and I will mention my mood problems /HRT regime as well.

I haven't spoken to a GP at my surgery for years and only attended for blood tests and vaccinations etc, HRT is being provided by Newson Health Clinic.

I will update the forum later if anything helpful turns up.

Take care ladies.

Hope the doc can help you. I’ve had really painful ears for weeks too. But it comes and goes. Hopefully I’m getting over it now. x

Hello Dotty.

I have been promised an appointment today but nothing so far.

I think lots of people at my surgery are seen by a nurse practitioner who listens to their chest and prescribes anti biotics. I worry about taking ABs because they can upset my digestive system and lead to a UC flare so I would rather see a doctor to discuss treatment.

I will update as promised if I get to see the elusive GP!

Take care.

Hello ladies.

I ALMOST had a face to face consultation with a GP!  So near and yet so far!

At lunch time I was waiting to be contacted by phone and was resting on the bed when the GP called and woke me up.

Long story short he doesn't think I need anti biotics but is happy to examine me if that is what I want. I explained that I would rather avoid ABs if possible so he will contact me on Wednesday to see how I feel then. He reviewed my latest blood tests for  Hashimoto's and Ulcerative Colitis and they were all fine but to be sure he will arrange further tests and I should make an appointment with the nurse. I also said that I am struggling with my meno mood swings and he will try to hurry along my appointment with the NHS Consultant.

All in all I think that is okay, I don't want ABs unless absolutely necessary and I plan to rest up today to see if that helps me feel better. I am pleased about the extra blood tests as these will put my mind at rest. My moods and HRT regime are my ongoing problem and that is being addressed albeit slowly.

I hope this is of help to you ladies and wishing you all well.

Hi.

Yes, my son had a really bad ear, then I’ve had a bad ear with, what I thought were just hormonal sweats, but now I’m not so sure, and my OH has a painful ear radiating into his cheek.
We’ve had runny noses and sneezes, headaches and feeling yuk for a while now. Not bad enough for us to be in bed, but still ‘ something’ that makes us feel tired and rundown.
I was at the doctors today, ( blood tests) and the nurse told me there’s loads of different bugs going around and she’d been ill with a chest infection since November. After two lots of ABs, she’s finally feeling better. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Hello again ladies.

I have just been speaking to my friend who has been ill since Christmas with a virus, she is feeling better after a short course of ABs but she is not completely well yet. Her son saw a Nurse Practitioner today and has been prescribed ABs to take if he is isn't feeling better by the end of the week.

I had a chest infection years ago when both my children were preschoolers . The GP told me that what I really needed was rest but I wasn't going to get that wth two young children so she gave me antibiotics instead!

I think with enough rest the body has a fighting chance of beating an infection but sometimes life gets in the way and we need some help.

Take care ladies.

Hello ladies.

Just another update for anyone interested.

I am quite disappointed with the latest development. As you can see from the above I had a phone call from a GP on Monday. This was in response to a message that I sent to the surgery via their AskMyGP service. This is the only way to consult a doctor or nurse at the practice and the lines open at 7.30 am. Unfortunately by 8. 30 am the service is withdrawn as all appointments are taken. I requested a face to face consultation with a GP because I wanted to also talk about my HRT and review some recent blood test results. I expected the phone call on Monday would be to offer me an appointment but straight away the doctor said that he can deal with me on the phone instead of me coming into the surgery. He later told me that he would be happy to examine me if I wanted that.

As I have reported we agreed on the blood tests and that I likely didn't need ABs for my viral infection. We agreed that he would text me on Wednesday ( he only works Monday and Wednesday) to discuss how I am doing.
Yesterday I was planning what I would ask him via text and although my cold is improving I am still concerned about the mood swings I am having. I appreciate that this is really a matter for a specialist but I wanted my doctor to know that I am worried about my mental health.

First this this morning I had a short text from another doctor asking me how my respiratory problems were today. The reply was via a code and it made clear that only a short response would be allowed. I replied that I thought I was getting better and I would be in touch again if I needed to be.

The thing is ladies I really wanted to remind my doctor about my hormonal ups and downs because I want him to be aware of my main health worry. It seems however that I have been given the minimum amount of treatment and no opportunity to meet in person.

I feel a bit abandoned really and I am so grateful that I have a meno clinic appointment to look forward to!

Sorry for the rant ladies but many thanks for being there!

Take care everyone.
