32 y/o peri/meno symptoms
« on: December 13, 2022, 06:53:34 PM »

Hi everyone

I’m 32 years old and for the past 7 months I’ve developed the following:

Erratic periods (can have up to 16 days of light bleeding, few days break then it returns for a week or so) I’ve had 3 separate periods in 4 weeks.

Internal shaking sensation/nervousness/jittery

Pulsatile tinnitus and sometimes high pitched tinnitus

Muscle twitching

Hair thinning

Insomnia

Anxiety/health-anxiety

Electric shock feelings on head and body

Diarrhoea

Palpitations/irregular heartbeat/feeling my heartbeat throughout body, especially back of neck

Noise and light sensitivity

Head pressure

Very cold all the time

Symptoms seem to worsen when period arrives/ends

I was on the Depo Provera contraceptive injection which I stopped just over one year ago. My GP isn’t concerned with the above symptoms.

I am on iron tablets and B12 injections. Blood tests have been fine, no thyroid issues.

I bought a FSH home test which was a strong positive for elevated FSH levels (I now know that these tests aren’t reliable).

I’m waiting on estrogen/progesterone test results which I’ve had done privately.

My mother was done with menopause in her 40s.

I’ll wait to see what the results of my estrogen/progesterone test is, and I’ll get in touch with my GP if they are abnormal. But in the meantime, does this sound hormone related and is it possible I could be experiencing changes at 32 years old?

I suppose I’m just looking for advice and/or support, as I feel very alone and I’m not sure what’s going on with my body. Thank you.

Hello milkandtwo and welcome to the forum. To me, every single symptom you have listed sounds menopausal and it is unfair you are not being taken seriously. You are not too young to experience menopause and even more so as your mother went through it at 40. I understand how difficult it can be to be taken seriously and told you are too young to be starting perimenopause.

You are not alone any more. You have found a lovely and supportive forum. :)

Hello milkandtwo and welcome to the forum…

Hi Flossieteacake, thanks very much for the warm welcome and support. Given that I’m 32, and my GP isn’t listening to me when I tell her I believe my hormones are the cause of my symptoms, is there anything else I can do?

As mentioned, I’ve had to resort to paying for a private estrogen/progesterone test and should have the results soon. If my results are abnormal, is there any point trying to discuss it with my GP for further testing?

When this began around 7 months ago, I experienced the worst anxiety, specifically health anxiety, to the point I could convinced myself I was dying. I was shaking like a leaf, very disassociated and had this feeling of fear daily.

After explaining all symptoms to my GP, she prescribed me antidepressants!

Thanks again :-)

Peri menopause = most of the symptoms you describe.  Periods can stop at any age so no one is 'too young'!  The Daisy web-site is dedicated to 'early' menopause.

Why isn't your GP concerned?  I would ask for a referral to a dedicated menopause specialist for which there are waiting lists, both on the NHS and private Clinics.  Not a gynaecologist!

Let us know how you get on.

I really am sorry to hear this. I would be very firm and insist on trying HRT. You can say all you have said on here and point out this runs in your family.

I went to GP at 38 saying I think I am perimenopausal. The GP burst out laughing and said I am too young. I went away feeling so dismissed. I then spoke to a different GP and insisted on HRT and was finally given it. I think we have to be insisent.

Hi CLKD, thank you very much for your reply. I’ll check out the Daisy website.

I told my GP that I had been on the Depo Provera injection for around one year, I stopped getting it in December 2021 and my periods returned to normal within 3 months. They then became erratic after that. My GP seems to think that my erratic periods are down to coming off Depo Provera, and she has put my other symptoms down to anxiety, for which she prescribed antidepressants.

I told my GP that having a period for 16 days straight, and sometimes 3 periods in 4 weeks is concerning me. She said “You’re probably not ovulating. Would it be a problem if you don’t get pregnant, what with the cost of living? It can take up to 2 years for periods to return to normal after Depo Provera”.

(I have a 4 year old child and don’t plan on another pregnancy but I thought the doctors comments were a bit insensitive)

Thanks again

What a horrible thing for the GP to say. I am so sorry they said that to you.

It's the way that it was muted.  An employer is legally not allowed to ask such questions!

It may be that your body is going into peri so periods are waxing and waning.  I would miss months then it would be back for a few more.  Regularly.  "the Change", does what it says on the tin.  Menopause is literally, the last monthly period.  We are advised to wait until we've been 12 months since our last bleed, Nature however can decide otherwise  >:( then we have to begin counting again  ::)

Let us know how you get on.  Do ask your GP for a referral to a dedicated menopause clinic, not a gynae.

Why if your GP thinks you have anxiety has she recommended an antidepressant, did she suggest which 1?  Some do ease anxiety, however, NICE do not recommend them as a first route for your symptoms.  U may not require HRT but treatment can protect heart and bone health.  Do you have anxiety at any particular time of day?

That’s a very wierd comment from your Gp and you’re very right to question it and be concerned.

She prescribed me 10mg Citalopram (also known as Celexa I believe). My anxiety seems to be worse when I wake up. It’s like I’m in fight or flight mode for no apparent reason - I get internal tremors, I’m very aware of my heartbeat and I can feel my pulse in the back of my neck. Not to mention the pulsatile tinnitus (this comes and goes, and isn’t there 24/7).

When this first started, I had two episodes in which I woke up at 3am, physically shaking, and I couldn’t regulate my body temperature. I was sweating then freezing.

GP wouldn’t do any hormone blood tests which is why I’ve paid privately, just to get a rough idea of whether this is related to estrogen/progesterone levels.

I do believe this is all hormone related. I think because I’m 32, doctors won’t entertain me. I just need a GP (or anyone!) who is willing to hear me out, instead of dismissing me. Thank you.

You’re on the right track, finding someone to listen to you is the way to go.

MM ladies will do so every day, rest assured of that.
Peri can come on at a very early age for all manner of reasons, but once it does it certainly needs to be recognised and supported.

Thank you Marchlove. I was a bit worried about posting at first, but I’m glad I did. You’re all very welcoming and supportive  ;D
