Utrogestan - any good stories please?
« on: November 24, 2022, 06:25:33 PM »

Hello
I am 54 and post menopausal for 4 years.
After a 7 month wait to see a HRT GP I've finally been prescribed oestrogel and utrogestan. I had been taking tibolone but asked my own GP for a change of HRT plus testosterone for libido.  The specialist GP will only give me the oestrogel and utrogestan for now saying I need to up my oestrogen levels before introducing testosterone.

Anyway I'm now ready to begin this new regime but Im a bit apprehensive about side effects from the utrogestan- I'll be taking 100mg each night plus one pump of oestrogel daily.

I've read so much scary stuff about some poor womens experiences with utrogestan but I want to try this and give it a good go to see if things get better for me.  Sooo... Im just looking for some encouragement and hopefully good news stories from those happy with their utrogestan. Hopefully there are plenty.

I do realise that I may take a while to settle on this but I'm hopeful of gaining some better sleep at least, which has been an issue for me lately.

I take 200 mg for half the month, have done for over a year. I honestly wouldn’t be able to tell whether I was taking it or not if I didn’t know!

I am careful to take it right before bed and don’t eat after 9pm when I’m taking it though.

Thank you all for taking the time to reply.

It's good to hear that not everyone taking this has problems.

I will be taking my first dose this evening and trying to stay positive and focus on the benefits I hope to get from this HRT.

I use utrogestan vaginally every second night and have no problem.  If you use it vaginally you need less as it gets to where it's needed more easily and is less systemic - that's why every second night rather than every night.

Hi

I went from hating utrogestan in my late forties, to counting the minutes until I can take it (I take it sequentially).  You can take it vaginally, or alternate by mouth and as a pessary (without being TMI it's messy and tastes horrible, which isn't great if you have a busy intimate life!).

However, 1 pump of oestrogel sounds incredibly stingy, so some women find it's not just the P, it's the ratio of E to P, so I'd say if you have some teething issues, rather than throw your hands up and blame the utrogestan, it's highly likely you need more oestrogen.

I'm on four pumps and I'm only just 50, my sis in law is younger than me but had a total hysterectomy, she's on six pumps and a patch (she's under Nick Panay, her GP is frothing with rage, but 'sorry, are you saying you know more than Mr Nick Panay? shuts him up!).

I'd really recommend getting your head into some menopause stuff (there's some good books now and some fab fact sheets on Louise Newsom's website) as GPs tend to have a riduculously cautious (and I'd say quite sexist) view of HRT and middle aged women.  It's worth knowing and being able to fend off some of the utterly bonkers and clueless things they come out with.  Menopause is a hormone deficiency, not an endurance test, we're not evolved to live much beyond our fertility, women run on oestrogen.

It's like all hrt, the vast majority of women are perfectly fine on it (they wouldn't be able to sell it if they weren't), the ones who aren't post on here. I get fatigue on it and for that reason I will continue to use a sequi regime post meno.

I've been on utrogestan 100 orally, one a day for 5 months now. No problems at all. Doesn't seem to make any difference whether  I take it on an empty stomach or not, either- i don't like going to bed feeling peckish so I've often taken it not long after a snack and i don't feel any different.
I do seem to be sleeping better recently-I was having trouble not being able to fall asleep till 3/4 in the morning, despite being tired, and that has stopped. Dont know if it's the utrogestan or just coincidence!

I used to dislike Utrogestan in the early days of taking it. It left me feeling completely ‘zombies’ the next morning.

However I stuck with it and now literally adore it  ;D

I sleep really well whilst taking it (14 nights out of 28) and I now feel a general calming effect rather than it making me over tired.

Good luck xx

Secret for me was when I was told to always take it at night as it makes you sleep - hence problem with taking it in the day, but its great to get a good nights sleep. I take it sequentially.

Just started on it last night, after finding that Evorel Conti patches cause frequent bleeds, so have switched to Evorel 50 with Utrogestan 100, on 25/28 regime for Utrogestan. I slept well, (I always do now) but did have a little chest tightness in the night. Went away as soon as I burped when I got up for a wee.

Hope yours works out for you - and hope mine does, for that matter!
