Can Utrogestan cause terrible anxiety?
« on: November 21, 2022, 11:26:13 PM »

Hi everyone. I’m having a tough time with both anxiety and depression and wondering if Utrogestan is the culprit.
Started combined continuous HRT in April 2022(am 2 years post menopause and 54). Seemed ok at first but started with awful anxiety after about 4 months which hasn’t got any better. Took 100mcg Utrogestan orally with Evorel 50 then doc suggested trying it vaginally and started me in Evorel 75. Have only been on this new regime for 10 days but not feeling better. I did suffer awful PMT most cycles pre and perimeno. Could any of my problems possibly be caused by the progesterone or am I imagining it as it took so long to start? Also got awful acne on oral Utrogestan which might suggest intolerance! Feel like I’m going mad as anxiety and depression are so exhausting especially as I’m working full time.

If you want to know if utro is the culprit you could try a few cycles on a sequi regime (200mg x 12 days per cycle). You'll have a bleed but you'll be able to see if you're OK on oestrogen only. If it is utro you can try a different form of prog such as provera or consider long cycle sequi. I use a 6 week cycle because utro gives me fatigue. Anxiety can be a symptom of too much oestrogen as well as too little.

Anxiety is dreadful. I have it again after it subsided a bit a while ago. I am on Evorel 75 and the coil. I had the most awful anxiety attack just now, whilst driving in the near dark, on a fast bendy road. I went hot and shakey, thinking I was going to pass out!

I don’t know what the answer is.

Hope it all calms down for you soon, as it’s very debilitating x

Eat Girls EAT!  low blood sugar can cause anxiety surges, I would suffer on my journey back from work unless I ate biscuits or a banana 20 mins. B4 the drive  :-\ and know that there are NO lay-bys on the route made my anxiety and nausea much worse.  Sometimes I would shake once I got back, a 13 miles journey, DH would be at the door with a biscuit  ::)

Hi Sheila99,

Sorry to cut in on this post, but can I just ask.

You said that too much oestrogen can cause anxiety, (my anxiety is a lot better) but do you high levels of your blood estrogen levels of taking too high a dose of estrogen?

Thanks so much

And TrishG, anxiety is truly awful, sending love and hugs xxx

Hi TrishG  :welcomemm:  Sorry to know you are having problems & yes you're right, unfortunately progesterone can cause anxiety in some unlucky women, though many find Utrogestan sedative & calming.  You might like to have a look at this link from Newson Health on progesterone intolerance if you haven't seen it already.

I agree with Sheila that trying Utrogestan cyclically could help you identify whether it's to blame for the way you're feeling & with CLKD on the importance of balancing blood sugar, especially at this stage of our lives when our bodies become less able to regulate it efficiently.

Yes, but as often with meno there's a complication. The level that you need to feel good may be quite different than someone else's, hence the wide range. As your anxiety is improving it sounds as though you're on the right track.

Thanks for the replies everyone-and the lovely kind wishes! I’m soldiering on with the Utrogestan vaginally for a little while as have only changed the method from oral in the last two weeks and it might take time to adjust to this? If nothing gets better my meno specialist doc has suggested trying the oestrogen without the Utrogestan for one month as apparently this is safe enough then I will be having a full review of the HRT with her.
Does anyone know how long it might take my brain to switch from oral Utrogestan 100mcg to vaginal Utrogestan? Could it take a period of adjustment perhaps? The acne has now gone.

It's the body that adjusts, interfering with our daily life because medication of any sort can make us feel ill.  Several ADs in the 1980s made me feel too ill to continue, often more than 3 days  :-\.

When do you speak to your specialist again?  Will you require a scan .........
