Starting estrogel and utrogestan but there's a problem
« on: November 13, 2022, 09:32:33 PM »

Hi, I've waited nearly two years for an appointment at the menopause clinic and at last I've been prescribed HRT. The clinic sent a letter to my GP of what to prescribe. When I spoke to my GP she prescribed the Estrogel pump which was what I wanted and the meno clinic had advised. But the problem is the meno clinic advised a 100mg of utrogestan pessary which is what I wanted but as the GP couldn't find the pessary on the system as 100mg only 200mg she insisted on giving me the 100mg tablets. I don't want to take tablets as I have a phobia about taking any tablets which I tried to discuss with her but she wouldn't budge.

I don't know what to do now as I can't take the tablets and I have no quality of life due to the menopause. It all just feels so hopeless.
Should I try to contact the meno clinic over the utrogestan issue, though it could be months before I can talk to them again.
It just feels like all the medical professionals are doing what's easiest and cheapest for them.
Any advice will be gratefully received.

The 100mg "tablets" of Utrogestan can be used orally or vaginally.

Hi Joaniepat, thankyou for your reply. x

So the 100mg utrogestan tablets that say they should be taken orally on an empty stomach CAN be inserted instead into the vagina like a pessary?

I'd be interested to hear from anyone that does this please. x

Hi Teresa667. I've found this thread for you re utrogestan vaginally https://www.menopausematters.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,43465.0.html#msg692584

There are quite a few members who use it in this way.

UPDATE
So I contacted the menopause clinic this morning about the utrogestan  prescription problem. The gynaecologist has stated.

Can consider Lutigest 100mg vaginal progesterone tablets at night.

Alternatively, Oral Utrogestan capsules can be used if above cannot be obtained. This will be off-license of the product and there is no available evidence on the absorption kinetics of progesterone preparations intended for oral intake when administered vaginally. Such intake should follow the same doses recommended with oral intake.

So I now have to decide do I get the Lutigest or use the oral utrogestan as a pessary. I really don't know which to try 😕

Does anyone know if the Lutigest is micronised and does it come with applicators?

I know we are all different but is any one using the Lutigest okay?

Any advice is greatly received. xx

Hi Teresa667,

I take the utrogestan 100g vaginally; I wanted to double check this with my gp as he had only heard that they could be taken orally, he went away checked and came back to me to confirm it was okay to take them vaginally.

They're used off licence this way in the UK but I believe elsewhere in Europe they are used this way all the time and have a licence to do so xxx

Hi Discogirl,

Many thanks for this.

Do you use an applicator?

Hi,

Yes, I push it up as far as I can with my finger, then use an applicator to make sure it's far enough up.

I've never had any problems, I also use it first thing in the morning as it doesn't sedate me xx
