Using VA treatments together
« on: October 24, 2022, 02:02:31 PM »

Hi All,

I have been using Vagirux for bladder issues for eight months. One tablet twice a week.
I have used the Yes range for a number of years so use it daily.
The Vagirux doesn’t help with itching and dryness so after reading on here I got some Olvestin prescribed by the Nurse at the surgery.
When I tried to get a repeat prescription I had all sorts of trouble speaking with the pharmacist, I fought my case but she wasn’t happy it was two estrogens.
Anyway I got to see a Very Young doctor who also wasn’t happy about me having both, saying I would be using two unopposed estrogens and need to consider my womb lining.
I fought my case again and referenced this forum and that some ladies are using both.

She eventually gave in on the proviso that I had breaks in total of three months.
I’m pretty confident I will need to use it all the time to be comfortable so will cross that bridge when and if necessary.

What is the opinion of the ladies using this regime please? Would you worry about womb lining in this case?

BTW. I am only using a pee sized amount of Olvestin on the outside,as it were, twice a week at present.

Your GPs are so out of date  :cuss:  I would ask for a referral to a menopause clinic, not a gynae.

VA treatment can used together, for Life if necessary and many of us require nightly applications.  No one has to have a break, ever.

Do a reload starting this afternoon: 'vagirux' up there now and another dose late this evening then every night for at least 2 weeks.  VA treatment is unlikely to affect the womb.

Ovestin can be used on the outer vaginal areas as often as you need it.

Good for you standing your grounds! Progesterone is not needed at all when using any topical oestrogen, not even if we use two different types. It is so infuriating you have been told this and also to have a 3 month break! If you have a 3 month break the VA will flare up and all the good you have done will be undone.

You have been using vagirux twice a week hence why you may not have improved. VA often needs daily treatment (best to ignore what the leaflet says) and many members on here use it daily. Using a pessary and cream is a great idea as it targets different areas. I would use the vagirux daily and Ovestin daily but only on the outer area. As you are okay with using Yes you can mix a little with the Ovestin when applying to the outer area.

I do not blame you! It is very frustrating. I did not even know what VA was until I joined here. You are welcome. :)

Just went through this same issue with the pharmacist!  Why is it that medical professionals think women are not capable of understanding their own body!  Men can buy testosterone and viagra over the counter but we, little brain dead women, well it takes an educated  person  to tell us what is best for us🤬.

Whatsupwiththis, sorry to hear you have had similar issues, it’s was the first time I have encountered having a Pharmacist call me to debate my case, when I said I want Olvestin to put on the outside she said “you can do that with the Vagirux” I replied “how do I do that with a hard pessary” You have to Laugh as it’s at this point you realise they haven’t got a clue.
Hope you got what you needed in the end😉

My doctor had no hesitation in prescribing Vagifem for daily use when the two a week was not effective. No hesitation again when I asked for Ovestin to use on the outside and like you, I use half a pea sized amount daily. I also use moisturiser.

There was a study carried out on the effect of these treatments on the womb after a year of use and found there was no changes, but not sure how huge the study was.

Anyways, VA is not something you can live with, it can get extremely chronic. It would be madness to stop treatment for three months as suggested to you.
I'm off to bed to read my book before I start spitting the bullets again!!  :-\

I saw a meno specialist a few years ago and was told that even using Vagifem every day was just equivalent to two systemic HRT tablets a year.

She was happy for me to use it every day plus Ovestin externally.
