Vagifem Sinuses
« on: October 14, 2022, 07:41:53 AM »

Hello Ladies! I hope everyone is doing ok!

I just wondered if anyone else was having side effects with vagifem?

I have been using it for about a year, and didn’t really notice any side effects, and I stuck with it because I like the ‘moisturising’ effects.

(I am also using 0.50 estrodot increased from 0.25 as advised by the menopause specialist)

But I recently noticed that since I’ve been using vagifem I have had tightness in my face, and around my nose and mouth. I just thought it was the after-affects of being off sick with stress!

But it was starting to cause me real problems, and got to the point where I didn’t want to socialise because I was so aware of the facial tightening!

Anyway, over the last few days I have stopped using vagifem, and I feel so much better! I felt like my sinuses were clearing out, the facial tightness has gone away, and my body feels slightly less bloated!  :)

I’m a bit disappointed as I like the ‘vaginal’ effects, but there was clearly something not agreeing with my body!

I couldn’t find anything similar on Google, but I just wondered if anyone else had similar side effects?

Hi Sleepy123,

I don't use vagifem however I've just looked online regarding side effects of vagifem and this is what I've found.

Signs of an allergic reaction, like rash; hives; itching; red, swollen, blistered, or peeling skin with or without fever; wheezing; tightness in the chest or throat; trouble breathing, swallowing, or talking; unusual hoarseness; or swelling of the mouth, face, lips, tongue, or throat.

You maybe a bit sensitive to the vagifem, bloating is listed as a side effect also.

I don't know if this helps or not but I do hope you get sorted xxx

It may be the fillers rather than the active ingredient.

However, peri menopause can increase the symptoms you describe. Also, to protect themselves from being sued, Companies list every possibility on an 'in case' basis  >:(

I would suspect that an allergic reaction would happen within 12-24 hours.

I am sorry you have had this reaction. I cannot use vagifem as it gives me terrible stomach cramps. Perhaps you would be okay using Ovestin instead?

Maybe too much oestrogen in your body in general is affecting your sinuses.  I had a lot of sinus trouble around my late forties/ fifties often as you say brought on by stress as well.  I read up at the time that as your body depletes in oestrogen your sinuses should improve.

Having said that i have had sinus trouble and blocked ears again recently after having covid but I think that is down to the covid infection this time.  Have you tried a decongestant just to see if that works ?  It has helped my recent sinus congestion but the type i got should only be used for a short time or else you can get worse.

If the vagifem is helping you you may end up worse off at the 'other end' by stopping it.  It's all a juggling act !

Just wondering if this started when you increased the estrogen patch from 25 to 50? Just seems strange that you were ok for a year on vagifem before this. That said, it can cause systemic effects for some even though they say it doesn’t! X

Thank you ladies for all your replies.

I think it may possibly be the fillers, as I have issues with things like sucrose.

Or it may have just been too much estrogen? The nurse said 10mcg was very small so I wasn’t that worried about it, but maybe it just didn’t agree with me.

The facial tightness started round about the same time I started using vagifem, but at the same time I was also off work with stress, so I just thought it was an overhang/anxiety from the stress.

It was only when someone mentioned to me recently that I appeared ‘wired/irritable’ that I made the connection, because I don’t think the estrodot causes any issues.

Anyway, I have stopped using vagifem for a couple of days, and my body feels like it is slowly returning to ‘normal’ so we will see how it goes!

Why are these things so difficult!  :-\

I think it is important to get something else for your VA symptoms because they can return and will make you feel sore. It is okay not to use vagifem. I am unable to use it and find Ovestin works fine for me.  :)
