New to HRT and intense period pain
« on: September 08, 2022, 06:36:56 PM »

Hi everyone! I’m new to hrt and 5 months post menopause. I’m writing at 4am after by being woken with this constant period pain in my thighs, I use to get this when my period was about to start but less painful and only for about an hour or so. My GP started me on Estalis conti 50/140 and I had to take the patch off after 3 days as I had constant period pain from day 1. She then started me on Femoston conti 1/5, I was fine for the first week now in my second week and the period pain has been so intense and constant I can’t sleep, also feeling quite teary like very bad pmt. Stopped taking it yesterday but still this pain in my thighs! My GP referred me to a menopause clinic yesterday, but I can’t get an appointment until mid November. She recommended I go back onto the Estalis conti patch as it is a lower dose of hormones and the period pain wasn’t as intense as Femoston. Does anyone have any advice as I don’t want to stop Hrt until I wait for my appointment in November. Both types stopped my menopause symptoms such as hot flushes and joint pain, but I’m not sure I can cope with this side effect. I could hardly work this week with little sleep! Thank you!

Mmmm... it can be a nasty side effect of Hrt sadly. I had this with patches and utrogestan; a constant nagging period pain in stomach and thighs. I also had bleeding every 3 weeks. In the end, I had to resort to a mirena coil. Now I am
trialling sandrena with the coil. I am not ( touch wood!) bleeding any longer and the pains are less.

I think if after 6 months, the pains haven’t gone, it’s probably time to look at alternative Hrt products? Femeston 1/5 is quite a low dose Hrt, so I’m surprised that you are feeling rough on that?

I would look for something where you can start with a lower dose eg 1 pump oestrogel or a 25 patch with a separate progestogen eg utrogeston.

Thank you for your advice! I do have to wait over two months for my menopause specialist appointment should I just stop hrt altogether or can you use half a continuous patch until you build up to a full patch? I’ve been off femoston for 48 hours now and still have lingering period pains. Thanks again!  :)
