Don’t know if am peri - wild goose chase?
« on: August 28, 2022, 02:49:44 PM »

Totally new here and hoping that somebody might give me some pointers. I’m 46, and about 18m ago I started with anxiety which had previously been well controlled. Upped ADs, no big difference. Seemed to be fine one day, then on edge and exhausted the next. I must note here that I didn’t really  have any other peri symptoms. No brain fog, or hot flashes - my periods were closer together but they’ve always been irregular.  I started tracking periods and seemed to co-incide w ovulation. Anyway - I looked in to perimenopause and spoke to Dr. He did blood work tests (yes, I know - he also kept referring to it as ‘the change’) and everything came back as pretty normal re estrodial and LH. Doc said I could try HRT and see. 1 pump a day and Utrogestan for days 1-21. Started in May. I upped dose of gel myself to 2 pumps. Anyway - it’s 3m now and I couldn’t honestly say that I see any change at all. (Oh - except I have a bleed every 2 weeks which is frustrating). Should I just knock the HRT on the head and accept that anx is unrelated to peri? (Sorry - this is probably an impossible question!)

Hi welcome to The Club. Yep.   The Change - does what is says on the tin.

Some find that keeping a mood/food/symptom diary of use.  My periods waxed and waned for several years.  3 months isn't long to trial HRT as it can be Trial and Error  ::)

What symptom did you want to ease first?  Whilst anxiety can be a peri-menopause problem, if someone has already suffered then it may become more noticeable.

Which AD are you on?  A few can ease anxiety otherwise a dedicated anti-anxiety medication may be better.  Initially every day then on an 'as necessary' basis.  Some find that they require both: HRT and an AD.

Hopefully someone on your regime will give advice.

Thank you for replying- I really appreciate any help at all. I’m upping my AD s again - but also wondering if a menopause clinic might be worth the cash. Mr Dr was just so bloody useless.

Mood/food/symptom diary sounds like a plan. Is there a template or just freestyle ? Xx

Oh totally freestyle ;-) and 1 shouldn't have to pay for a menopause clinic though it may be quicker.  Make sure it's not a gynaecologist but a menopause specialist.

Which AD do you take?  I've found escitalopram suits at the moment.  I've taken ADs since 1988.

Hi  :welcomemm:

Sounds like you could be hitting peri to me. I’m sorry your suffering anxiety, it’s the pits.
It’ll probably be hit and miss for sometime though. Your hormones will be all over the place.
Anxiety is a symptom of menopause, and will come and go, as most of us on here can say.
My doctor gave me ADs but I knew it was hormones causing it, so I declined them after taking some previously, which I had a bad reaction too. Once I’d sorted my hrt out, it subsided after some time.
Hrt can be tricky too, it’s not one suits all, it’s trial and error. Unfortunately.
Try and read the posts on here, and hopefully, you’ll be armed with some knowledge for either your doctor or a clinic.

It's a difficult one. Anxiety and insomnia were my worst symptoms and they took 3 months to go, they seem to need a build up of oestrogen. How long have you been on 2 pumps? I'd be inclined to give 2 pumps the full 3 months. If you still feel no different perhaps stop and see if you're worse.
