Help! Sleep paralysis and going on hols
« on: August 19, 2022, 08:11:07 AM »

Morning all! I need some help, advice, support.  Last night I suffered what I think was sleep paralysis. I used to get this in late teens early adulthood and it had a hallucinating element where I thought people were stood around my bed. I used to leave me terrified for days.  Thankfully this wasn’t like that. I just felt like my brain woke up but my body felt nothing lol…my brain couldn’t register it so I shot up eventually and started crying.  Problem is today I’m going to France with my partners extended family. I still feel shaky, weepy & scared. I also (as expected) am now scared to sleep.  Advice, tips, anyone else who has suffered this like to chip in with coping mechanisms.  I desperately want to enjoy this holiday 😫.

It isn't dangerous.  It's the slight gap between waking and the body catching up.  I haven't had it happen for a while.  Once I realised the cause, that my brain was not connecting with the rest of me, I relaxed.

Go on your holiday.  Keep hydrated. Eat little and often.  Tell someone so that you have support.

It's quite a weird feeling.  If it happens then try deep breathing with eyes shut.  Give the body and brain time to get re-aquainted ;-).  Post card please?

Kat, l have had this in the past, it can be very scary, especially as you are aware of being conscious but can't move. However, l completely agree with CLKD's advice. Try to tell yourself you are OK and make an effort to relax as much as you can.You will find that you very soon 'come back' to yourself as body and brain synchronise. Hopefully it won't happen again but if it does you will be OK.... Have a lovely holiday!

How's the weather in France or are you stuck in a queue?  ::)

Weather was lovely, although very humid 🥵. Thankfully we didn’t get stuck in any queues…or stuck in the tunnel lol.

That's great.  Any more episodes of sleep paralysis?

Now you need to tackle the laundry  ::)

No more episodes…but a few restless nights after. 😁I did it all there using the free electricity…so no laundry for me lol.
