Low libido testosterone
« on: August 11, 2022, 01:23:49 PM »

Hi all. 56 (almost). 10 years post menopause. On hrt gel and progesterone pill for  a year. Not getting the UTI type issues anymore and sleeping a bit better. Only thing is it hasn't done anything for my libido. Which is at rock bottom. I'm really not ready to give up this part of my life. In fact only met the love of my life last year. Better late than never !   I've heard that testosterone might help. Has anyone tried this ? How hard have you found getting it is. Worried my Dr's won't take me seriously as I'm not a young woman. But this really is a massive issue to me.

Hi! ask your GP for a referral to a dedicated menopause clinic - not a gynaecologist - a Dr there can ask your GP to prescribe testosterone .  It may be the kick that you need ;-).

 :welcomemm:

GPs still stick to the 'you are too young/old' idea but in reality, no one is too young or too old for menopause!  GPs forget that some young girls never menstruate and a few have a few bleeds then nothing.  Rare but it does happen.

Let us know how you get on.  A new relationship - new ideas  :vibe:  ;)

Thanks. Got an appointment next wk with the practice nurse. You can't ever get a gp App. Fingers crossed and thank you for the reply. I'll definitely look to see if there's a menopause clinic in my area

You might, if very lucky, get testosterone gel from your GP, but many are not confident  or knowledgeable enough to prescribe it. You could ask for a referral to a NHS menopause clinic, but waiting lists are very long. Alternatively, your GP can contact a specialist for "advice and guidance". You could also consult a menopause specialist privately, if that is an option.
They normally like your oestrogen levels to be optimised before testosterone is prescribed, so it can also depend on whether your other menopause symptoms are controlled.
There is a long-running thread in the Private Lives section called "Testosterone Here We Go", and you will find other threads too if you use the search function.

Well. Update so far. Thought I'd put what's happening incase anyone else is having the same problems.
Seen my gp and she said no gp is allowed to prescribe testosterone. That it has to be a specialist. I've been referred to jessops hospital (Sheffield) no idea what this will entail or when the appointment will be. I'll keep posting as and when things move (slowly) forward
