Withdrawal and other stuff
« on: July 11, 2022, 09:00:08 AM »

Morning all,
It is with regret that I’ve decided to ditch the hrt for now. The Evorel patches & utrogestan just don’t fit me. My reasons are as follows:
* Utrogestan has left me the most tired I’ve felt in years to the point I can’t function.
*I’m having a period every two weeks which has also I believe left me really low on iron and thus shattered.  Restless legs mean I now also can’t sleep.
* Mentally I feel the most anxious I have felt since I was a teenager.

All in all I feel a bloody wreck & have decided to take a break until I see the meno specialist again in September. My GP has been nothing short of useless knowledge wise and it’s an understatement to say I feel let down.
I’m hoping you ladies can help me with the following:
* Iron tests- what am I asking for and what should I be on the lookout for results wise. I’m starting to think iron has been a real problem for me for a while.
*Withdrawal wise (ie. everything getting out of my system) how long before I reach a base level again?

Thank you for any help any of you can offer.

Hi Kat I'm sorry to hear that.

I really hope it doesn't come to this for me, but if I can't figure out what's going on, it just might. Then I will have to deal with all my many low estrogen symptoms again, so I really don't want it to get to that.

Anyway, before ditching HRT... Have you explored other progesterones options besides utrogestan? And have you tried the utrogestan vaginally as that usually sees many women avoid systemic side effects?

If you are having a period every 2 weeks, you would probably benefit from considering the Mirena coil - which would completely stop all bleeding within 6 months. And many women find they don't get any systemic side effects because it is local to the uterus and only a tiny dose gets into the blood stream.

The anxiety, alas that is probably an estrogen symptom - although it could be progesterone too. Starting on a low dose and remaining on each dose for at least 12 weeks before increasing if needed, is the best option there.

With the iron subject, there are two different things - there's haemoglobin, which is looking at the amount of iron in the blood right now and then there is ferritin - which is looking at the amount of iron stored. My understanding is that often only haemoglobin is run, although ferritin is the more useful test. So be sure to request that. I checked my own ferritin with medichecks.com home blood test.

They say that anything 10 and over is 'normal' for ferritin, but most people know that is extremely low and ideally you want to aim for 60-100. Mine was 44, so I am currently on Spatone gentle iron supplements. My iron has been low for years though, I am only now on iron in case it is causing my heart palps and night time symptoms.

It should only be about 1-2 days before everything is out of your system. But obviously your body may take a while to adjust to coming off it. Just like stopping the pill, for eg.

Thank you Joziel.  I have tried utrogestan vaginally and sadly it was the same.
Thank you so much for the guidance on the iron. I think I’m going to do one of the private ones too…it helps to know what I’m looking for.

I spoke with the Daisy network tonight about what’s been going on and they have encouraged me (as have you in your response) to stick with it all for a bit longer.

Kat, have you tried some of the combined patches? They have different progesterones in them and they might suit you more. One has levonorgestrel and one has norethisterone...

Joziel, at the beginning of the year I tried Evorel Conti and the norethisterone messed up my ears so reluctant to try that (although maybe now a little more used to everything it wouldn’t have the same effect).  I guess it’s worth looking at others that wouldn’t leave me so tired if this doesn’t work out with a bit more perseverance.  Out of interest what do you use?

What does 'messed up your ears' mean?  ;D I've not heard that as a side effect before!

I am (as of today) on 50mcg patch, utrogestan 100mg and desogestrel POP to keep endo away. And testosterone.

;D It messed up my ears after a long period of remission with Mernieres. Thankfully it’s much better now though after been put back on meds..
Ok, so your a Utrogestan warrior too. Have you dropped down from your higher dose? I remember you said you were on 62.5 previously.

Yes, just today I finally decided to go back to the 50 patch. I had a hideous sleepless night with throbby body and trembling/shaking and loud and hard heart beat. I didn't get to sleep till 4am. Today has been a write-off, I couldn't work at all I was so tired. I managed to get a nap late afternoon.

So I've reduced the estrogen to 50. I've started zinc and quercetin which arrived in the post today. And tomorrow I'm going to stop the low histamine diet. I've continued it today. But after 6 days things were definitely not getting better, if anything they were getting worse (although I think that was a coincidence and not caused by the diet).

Ugh, those night time feelings are the worst.  I literally hate not getting a proper nights sleep…sleep is like a magic remedy for me. Wishing you a much better nights sleep tonight.  Hopefully the drop down to 50 will alleviate the side effects you’ve been having.  Well done for sticking with the low histamine diet, but I guess if it’s not working then there’s no point going through that too.
On my front, I’ve switched the utrogestan to vaginally and much earlier in the evening (I don’t mind feeling whacked at night at home) and upped the patch by a quarter. We’ll see how that goes for now.  I’m just going to ride the wave.  I did definitely feel less ‘out of it’ this morning…but still not as with it as I’d like to be.
I wish I didn’t have to work lol.

It is all so rubbish. I hear about women just starting on whatever HRT their doctor gives them and it's all lovely and perfectly fixes their symptoms and they have no side effects - ta da!! And I'm like, this is taking me the better part of a year to figure out here  ;D  and I'm still not sure it's going to work out  ;D
