Good news with Dexa scan
« on: May 31, 2022, 06:17:13 AM »

Hi Ladies,

I thought a bit of positive news regarding the protective benefits of HRT. There is osteoporosis in my family. I had a Dexa scan and it showed that( in my mid fifties) I have the bones of a young woman. No osteopinia ! And I am on a lowish dose , so HRT is protecting me .
I intend to ask for a scan every few years if I can.

I forgot to mention, that the radiologist who did it said that I would have to come off HRT soon and ten I would be " like everyone else"  and have osteopenia!
And get osteoporosis like my family members.
She said I would have a fight to say on it!

She also said there is no way of stopping it!
She also refused at first to give me the readings. Saying " you wont understand it! " - I insisted she write it down. I don't think she knew that you can look it up :o ??? ::)

Cheerful little sole she was.

What a dreadful thing to tell you. She's probably referring to the fact that HRT can't be prescribed for bone health alone but I'm sure you have lots of other meno symptoms which you need it for  ;)

Lucky it isn't her who's going to decide if you stay on it or not. They'd have a hard time justifying stopping it as it's clearly helping you.

Thanks everyone,

Every day I realise that there is very little knowledge around HRT and the medical profession. Even basic knowledge.  I intend to stay on it for ever,  many ladies in care homes , unable to walk or function, loss on bladder and bowel control. Etc - not one is on HRT, I know that for a fact.

Was the scan done on pelvis and hips?

This is very good news indeed. I have just increased my dose as after a recent fracture and Dexa scan I was disappointed to see that I have still lost bone density in spite of being on low dose HRT , I am 54.  The radiologist sounds very ignorant with a poor ‘bedside manner’! I have no intention of ever stopping HRT and will fight tooth and nail to keep it if required.  I don’t intend to suffer the horrendous pain and immobility caused by osteoporosis like all previous female members of my family. I hope to keep it at bay through HRT and calcium/vitD supplements. I’m so pleased you are seeing positive results x

Yes it’s outrageous these dear older ladies aren’t on any hrt. They don’t even give them Vagifem and for many that means continuous uti’s and antibiotics messing up their guts.

It’s a National scandal! x

Sadly - VA is difficult to treat in the care sector.  If residents are headed towards dementia, it is intrusive for a stranger to try to treat a vagina, which could be classed as abuse.

So low-dose ABs to keep pain under control is essential though I fear that this isn't offered.  As well as pain relief ............
