New to Forum - six months in to HRT
« on: May 09, 2022, 11:21:40 AM »

Hi everyone, I feel sure I am going to benefit from all the discussions here, and I'm sorry to read of some of your journeys not being the best. My HRT experience so far has been generally positive. Hot sweats, brain fog and painful feet all disappeared and I feel stronger and more in control. However, I feel sure that I should be able to fine tune this more. I have the Mirena coil and Estrodot 50 combination and the only negative side effects are  (a) weight gain, just seem to be hungry all the time but this is something that I should be able to tackle myself, I am more concerned with (b) occasionally I experience very heavy, tender breasts - exactly the same experience I would get the day before my period and wonder if the oestrogen is too much? I sometimes snip a small part of the patch off but I'm wondering whether a daily gel would be better as I would be able to react quickly and adjust the amount of gel straight away. Does anyone know? I was lucky in that I went privately to a clinic and had extensive blood tests revealing that at 52 I had gone through the menopause. I am keen to have my bloods done again now I have been taking HRT for a while but not sure whether I can just ask my GP for that (I can no longer go privately)  Thanks in advance  :)

Hi.  Menopause is literally, the last monthly period.  End of.  Peri-menopause is the years leading to that.  Blood tests are reliably unreliable  ::)

How R your periods behaving?  Do the sore breasts go when a bleed begins?  If the symptoms are bearable with added pain relief if necessary, could you live with them?

How long have you been on the HRT it can take 4-8 months B4 the body adjusts.

Some find that keeping a mood/food/symptom diary of use.  Ovaries keep pumping out small amounts of hormone for several years.  Let us know how you get on.

Thanks for such a speedy reply - I think I should have said that I haven't had a period for years. I was previously on a Mirena coil (to combat very heavy periods) so they stopped. After having it removed I decided not to have it replaced immediately as I wanted to see what stage my body was at. I finally saw a specialist a year after having it removed - and having no periods or bleeding in that time (and getting increasingly more menopausal symptoms), the blood test results seemed to confirm it. I totally take on board though that the tests are only good for the day they are taken, which is why I think it would be useful to have them taken more regularly - I just don't know if I am allowed to ask that of my GP. I guess I should just ask..
