Hints & Tips for Scars needed
« on: May 04, 2022, 08:20:55 PM »

I have a number of very large scars as a result of my surgery, and I'm very self-concious about them. Make up helps with covering the redness but does nothing for the lumps and bumps. I've tried Bio Oil which has softened the scars a bit but does anyone have any miracle cures, old wives tales or just plain old useful suggestions for reducing the lumps and bumps please?

There are various make up artists who specialise in covering scars, usually after burning.  I am sure that you will find someone who could show you how to apply 'cover' to the areas required.

I'm away out this morning otherwise I would do a search ............

A friend of mine used a silicone scar gel which really helped lessen her scar.  I believe that gels made with onion extract can be helpful too.

My husband had a double mastectomy three months ago and was told to silicone gel you can also get silicone tape. It’s help with lumps and bumps and helps keeps moisture in a makes a barrier. You can’t use use it on open bleeding wounds. And it must be and newer scars if it’s 6 months old it will not work.
The silicone tape is supposed to be better, but some people can’t tolerate the tape and can have bad reactions.

When I had my thyroid operation and had a cut across my neck my surgeon told me to use vitamin E cream or capsules and break it open and use on the cut. I had my operation about 10 years ago and you cannot see a scar. Hope this information helps

Thank you for the suggestions. I've been doing some research and it looks like I may have left it too late. I was only told to use Vaseline at first, and that doesn't seem to have helped very much  :'( and then I heard about the Bio Oil but that was more than 6 months after the surgery so maybe it's the same as the silicone gel and needed to be used within 6 months to be effective.

I'll look into the vitamin E and onion products

A nurse when removing stitches from a deep cut on my chin recommended rubbing vitamin E oil on the scar. After ooh 30 years there is no trace of a scar at all.

At the time it was necessary to **** a vitamin E capsule with a pin to get the oil. Tedious and a bit sore when the pin went off target and speared a finger :-\

I was speaking to my friend today and she said that she uses Dr Organic vitamin E pure oil complex as a facial and neck oil and she feels that this has helped to further reduce and soften her scar.  Her scar is on her neck.   It’s quite reasonable so might be worth a try.

It's never too late ;-).  What you rub in now won't do any harm and will probably encourage the areas to soften.

Can believe they recommended vaseline, I would try the vitamin E. My surgeon told me to use the vitamin E capsule, but when I went to the chemist to buy the capsules, they recommended the vitamin E  cream, and it worked fine. I think it would be worth giving it a go
