How long is the menopause after Full hysterectomy
« on: April 25, 2022, 06:28:47 PM »

I would just like to ask how long does the menopause symptoms last after Full hysterectomy. I had one 15 years ago and have been on estrogen 100 all of this time. I have started to experience night sweats, hot flushes and breast tenderness. Also anxiety has crept in.
Does anyone know if maybe my patches are to high?
How long will I need hrt for?

Hi loopyloo, I had a hysterectomy 5 years ago at age 43, I kept my ovaries did you?, I've been on various doses within those 5 years, I did get the symptoms you are describing when I was on higher doses, when I lowered the dose they went away, although I'd been fine on higher dose for months it seemed it just got too much for my body, but my ovaries still work so peri for me, by full hysterectomy do you mean ovaries were removed too?, as the needs for ladies without ovaries can be very different in menopause, how old are you as that may also make a difference, can't answer how long you will need hrt for I guess that's down to your personal decision on how your symptoms are without it, but from my own experience those symptoms are from too much estrogen, but obviously that may not mean the same for you, maybe lower the dose to 75 patch and see if you feel better x

Hi Loopylou - you haven't said how old you are? If you kept your ovaries then you may well now just be experiencing menopause but  I am guessing that as you were put on oestrogen straight away, you probably had these removed too at the same time as your full hysterectomy?

It may well be also that your testosterone levels have reduced and replacing this would be helpful, though deficiency would not give rise to flushes and breast tenderness. Flushes would tend to indicate insufficient oestrogen but breast tenderness, sometimes, too much.....

Have you changed brand at all or the location of the patch on your body or anything else which might lead to change in absorption?

If you have no ovaries and if the breast tenderness persists I would consult your doc to check all is OK. Although (oestrogen) blood tests are unreliable, in your case this might help to check whether your absolute oestrogen levels are too high?

Hi Ladies,
I was 30 years old when I had a full hysterectomy, ovaries too. Unfortunately, I had cancerous cells which did not go away many times with treatment. I do count myself lucky though, as I had already had two beautiful sons. I was put straight onto estrogen patches and later on testosterone gel. This was 15 years ago, so was wondering when I might need to reduce hrt, especially as I am experiencing breast tenderness, headaches and hot flushes. I did have my estrogen checked about a month ago and it was 220 and my testosterone was 0.4.
Havent got an appointment with specialist until September so any ideas.
Thank you
