I looking for some advice. If you have had a life time of mental health problems, how do you know when you are having menopause anxiety/depression/irritability symptoms what is causing it?
I am 47 and have always struggled with pmt and rising anxiety before my periods. Just lately things have got a lot worse. I am due on in 10 days (regular 28 cycle) and I can already feel the build up of helplessness, anxiety, low mood, irritability, urinary symptoms (which I use estrogen pessaries for), itchy skin, joint aches, brain fog, tiredness and insomnia problems. The acutal period itself is so painful and I feel so ill with it, which I feel pathetic about.  I feel such a failure as I am already on the maximum dose of anti-depressants and I take a top up one at night too. I probably have a week where I feel "okay". Could this be the menopause? Just not sure what my GP will suggest as more medication isn't an option 🙁 Thanks if you've got this far.

As you've got worse at a time that corresponds with peri it's probably fairly safe to safe it's meno. Would it help to think of hrt as replacing the hormones you should be producing yourself rather than medication? (Major design flaw >:(). As your issues are complex it might be wise to ask for a referral to a menopause clinic.

Hello Neerb74. I think you are being very hard on yourself. You are not a failure in any way. Mental illness is not something you can control and although antidepressants can help, they do not cure it. I can understand you are wondering if how you feel is related to menopause. It is difficult when feeling low anyway.

It sounds like the estrogen pessaries help you with the physical symptoms. I wonder if trying more HRT could help. I think if you tried it and felt better you would know if your feelings are menopause related. I agree with Shelia99 that to ask for a referral to a menopause clinic would be helpful.

I read an article recently where it suggested GPs were diagnosing women with mental health problems when in actual fact, the symptoms were menopause related.  Anti-depressants are dispensed and ladies health and wellbeing is rarely reviewed holistically.

As a sufferer of both, I am strongly of the opinion that the menopause and the hormonal issues I've suffered over the years have been the reason for my depression, anxiety, insomnia etc.

All of the symptoms you described sound sadly like my experience of the menopause.  It's awful that you're going through such a difficult time but honestly, stop beating yourself up.  You've taken a huge step to ask for advice on here - there are so many lovely, kind women who totally understand and empathise with what we are going through.  It's tough, I know.

The good news is though - there are some Menopause experts out there!  I had an appointment with a wonderful Specialist who has focused her recent medical career on menopause/hormone conditions.  She was a breath of fresh air!  I'd recommend speaking to a medical expert that can look at all your symptoms and help you create a plan that works for you.

Hello Neerb74

You have probably already looked at the list of menopause symptoms and discovered that everything you are experiencing is mentioned. Many ladies here have similar stories to tell.

I agree that a menopause clinic or similar specialist would be a good idea and perhaps your GP can refer you.

Wishing you well.
