Ovestin internal cream
« on: April 15, 2022, 06:18:04 PM »

I’ve not been able to tolerate hrt. Bleeding. Blood pressure spikes. So I’m struggling through. But what I can’t deal with is after so much has been taken away from me, now my sex life has too. It’s impossible to have intercourse with my Husband as it’s excruciatingly painful. So I’ve been prescribed the above cream. Once a night for two weeks, then twice a week for two weeks. I’m 9 days in and I feel physically ill. I can’t tolerate anything touching my nipples they are so sore. But worst is I am so nauseous and have horrible upper gut cramps. So bad today I can’t eat. I’m gonna have to stop as I can’t feel so poorly. I’m sad that this may be the end of sex with my Husband, but I can’t feel poorly 24/7. How can a tiny bit of cream inserted topically cause so much misery. I’m so sad.

Oh Kay, I am so sorry the ovestin cream is causing you to feel so bad. Would it be possible stop the ovestin, wait to get back to normal and then try vagifem? I wonder if a menopause clinic would be more helpful for you in this matter as a GP will not be able help with different VA treatments.

Maybe don't do the loading dose immediately, but perhaps try using the product, say, every three days, and see what happens, or use half the dose of Ovestin for a while. You could build up gradually. It is such low dose, it will be a shame if you have to suffer with all the many symptoms of GSM (not just the painful PIV sex).

I’ve taken vagifem before. It didn’t help at all unfortunately. Vagifem gave me no side effects but this ovestin WOW it’s really kicking my backside. We haven’t tried since I started it. I’m so worried this is the end of my intimacy with my Husband. As If meno didn’t cause enough upset in our lives. Then it says ok we’re taking away this too. I hate this period of my life.

How long did you try vagifem for? If it did not cause you any side effects maybe it is worth taking daily until you see improvement?

Hi kay21, I really feel for you, I couldn't use vagifem due to awful side effects, when I started ovestin I thought here we go again with the same horrible side effects and I stopped, but had another go with it as can't stand the va symptoms, on the loading dose I got exactly what you described especially the upper gut pains and nausea it was horrible but I pushed on with the two weeks loading dose and once I got to the twice weekly those side effects went away, but if you really can't continue due to side effects maybe ask the gp for the estring if you haven't tryed it already, I was going to try that next, but once I got through the loading dose on ovestin it did settle, there are other options the gp can give you, so don't give up trying to find something that you can get along with, I too was shocked at how bad a small amount of cream can cause such awful side effects, I hope you find some relief to this awful situation, x

thank you. I thought I was imagining it. But it woke me up last night. I woke feeling really nauseous and horrible cramps on my upper gut. Just can’t get my head around how that could do that to me and make me feel so horrible. I’d love to carry on but I don’t think I can tolerate the stomach pains. So may try to look into the estring thingie. Vagifem didn’t alleviate my soreness at all. So didn’t see point of staying on it. Although I didn’t get this awful sick feeling with vagifem.

Just wanted to offer my sympathy. I use ovestin and fortunately it works for me but I know how horrible VA can be and the awful way it takes over your life.  I really hope you find something that works for you soon.

Hi Kay21,
Some people are more sensitive than others and may not need every day.
I'd reduce your dosage. Try every other night and use externally around the labia and just inside to start with. Don't bother with the applicator just a pea sized amount on your finger will do. This is all I started with as I was also very sensitive and suffered cramps, breast soreness and feeling sick in the morning. As the vaginal walls hydrate and things plump up the estrogen will not go systemic and you will be able to increase the amount without it  causing so many side effects. I use Ovestin every night this way now with no problems.

Thank you. But how I’ve felt today makes me want to just stop. My stomach is really messed up. I’m not sure I can tolerate these symptoms. I don’t know if I can try even half the dose. This has been horrible for past couple of days.

Stop taking it until you feel better, it's obviously causing you distress which wont help anything.  Ask you doctor to refer you to a specialst or menopause clinic and hopefully they will be able to help. It may just be a matter of finding the right dosage for you.

Regarding the nausea and upper stomach cramps, might you have a bug?
Hope you feel better soon, whatever the cause.

Hi kay21. Sorry to hear that you’re not getting on with Ovestin. You mentioned that you didn’t think Vagifem worked although you didn’t get the unpleasant side effects with it. I’d maybe consider giving the Vagifem another go. Vaginally administered estrogen can take a long time to take effect, particularly if you’re not on systemic HRT as well. For me it took at least six months of using 4-5 times a week before improvement. Also, Vagifem contains 17-betaestradiol and Ovestin contains estriol as the active ingredients so that might be making a difference to you x

Oh kay, there's no need to remain sex less, speak to your gp and explain your difficulties with the ovestin, like I said maybe try the estring, you never know that might be the one that helps you, don't give up no woman should be left to suffer or give up sex, maybe ask for a referral to a specialist, it's so difficult to cope with this awful condition my heart goes out to you, but don't give up trying x
