Ear and throat symptoms anyone??
« on: December 11, 2021, 04:02:45 PM »

Hi all, Struggling with what might be hormonal and what might be other health conditions…
I have a whole host of symptoms which started about a year ago following a viral illness (some probably hormonal - think standard peri list!, some really not - sore ear  and throat, on/off feverish (NOT hot flush!), constant slight cough) and I’ve recently been referred to a CFS clinic to see a consultant who has a specialism in chronic viral conditions (Epstein Barr, Lyme etc). At the end of September I went to a private hormone clinic to have my bloods analysed and they advised I wasn’t absorbing my oestrogen gel and switched me to 0.5/1mg oestrogen tablet on alternating days and upped my utrogeston to 200mg/day continuously. About 6 weeks after this some of my more obviously peri-menopausal symptoms as well as some of the other chronic fatigue/miscellaneous symptoms started to improve but now 2.5 months later I’m still maybe at 1/10 of normal energy and health levels. Two of the more bothersome symptoms I have are on-off sore earache and a sense of fluid ‘bubbling’ in my ears and on-off sore throat/swollen glands (sometimes raw sore throat, sometimes more swollen feeling). Hormone clinic advised these definitely not hormonal but I’ve read a couple of snippets of information that suggest hormone imbalance could have an impact like this on ears (but nothing about throat) and I just wondered if anyone out there had had similar experiences? And if they ever got to the bottom of it? Some days it drives my properly crackers…today I am very aware of a lump like feeling on the right side of my throat and a sore right ear with lots of noise in there…

About 30 years ago I had a virus that got into my inner ear. I can't remember about swollen glands now but did have severe earache and swooshing. The ear felt as if it was full of liquid. I'm not sure there's much they can do about but I expect it will settle down over time. Mine has left some permanent damage, I still have tinnitus (ringing rather than swooshing) and hearing is much worse in that ear.

I suffer from fatigue, sore throat, tongue and slightly dry mouth. It was suggested by ENT that the sore throat is most likely to be silent reflux. I have been suffering for a few years but I think since hitting peri around age 45 my periods changed and all the throat and ear ringing started. Sometimes I wake like I'm choking. Bloody awful. Things seem to come and go. Sorry nothing helpful. Also I'm told I might have sjogrens. On hrt and monitoring. Good luck.

I have allergic rhinitis - I wake often with my tongue trying to scratch the roof of my mouth and this morning my ears itch.  We call it 'spaniel' ear  ::).  As oestrogen levels drop muscles may become lax and I believe that this affects the Eustachian tubes between nose and ear. I've taken to using 'beconase' nasal spray recently as the symptoms are dire  >:( as well as hoovering the bedroom thoroughly as often as possible.

including the mattress !  If I spent the week hoovering I wouldn't get anything else done.   :-\

Hi. I have ear and throat issues too. I’m convinced they are peri related because I have had so many different tests and nothing else has been found.
It’s always my left ear and it feels blocked and full. I also get a feeling like pressure is building up in my head/ear. It comes and goes. I also get a popping in my ear which drives me nuts. Also get a sensation in my throat and lots of mucus where I have to keep clearing my throat. And a cough.
I have started to take an antihistamine at night because I read that during menopause we can become histamine intolerant. I do believe that it is helping me. Also if I focus on the ear sensation it gets much worse, so I try to ignore it.  I clench my jaw a lot and also grind my teeth so I have been trying to make a conscious effort to relax my jaw. I’ve been doing TMJ exercises too and massaging my jaw/neck.
Hope you get some relief soon. Hugs xx

If I wriggle my little finger in either ear it clears, momentarily - then begins to feel bunged up again.  Occasionally it pops and I can hear clearly.
