Oestrogel on Stomach
« on: April 08, 2022, 04:01:29 PM »

So as part of my ongoing search for the menopause solution I had a consultation with a gynaecologist from the London PMS and Menopause Clinic. He had worked closely with John Studd. He put me on the 7 day Utrogestan cycle and he also told me how important the application of Oestrogel is. He said you shouldn’t rub it in too much and spread it over a big area if possible. So he told me to use all of my upper thighs not just inner thighs, bum and most weirdly lower stomach. Has anyone else put it on their stomach? I just felt it was interesting as close to the womb!
Oh he also said if you use it there it should help vaginal dryness too.
Interested to hear if anyone has used Oestrogel on their stomach and if it helped symptoms more. Louise Newson clinic said use arms and inner thighs. So many different opinions lol!!

Hi, I use estrogel but have never used it on my stomach, to be honest I've read and seen so many different opinions on how to apply and where to apply it, it just becomes too confusing so I just stick to the instructions on the leaflet that comes with it, I do inner thighs,  I never rub it in, just spread thinly and allow to dry before dressing, dispite applying to inner thighs, it didn't stop vaginal dryness happening to me, I have to use ovestin aswell, I guess it's whatever works well for you, I tryed my arms but felt it didn't work so good there for me, I have read that if it's spread over too larger area it drys too quick and not enough hormones are absorbed, not sure how much truth there is to that, be interesting to see if anyone does use there stomach /bum and if it had good results x

Apart from my head, chest and feet I’ve put Oestrogel everywhere else. I try to use as big a surface area as poss and I rub it in so that it’s tacky/dries in a couple of mins.

Your specialist seems to be a bit too far off piste for comfort. He's put you on a worryingly low dose of utro specially given the high oestrogen dose. The utro manufacturer says 200mg x 12 days for a sequi regime but you're on 100mg x 7 days I think? Now he thinks he knows better than the gel manufacturer too. I've never heard of anyone suggesting you should put it on your abdomen. IMO you'd need a very good reason to believe him over the manufacturer for both products. They have to do extensive testing to get the products licensed so I assume they should know better than him. Is you specialist listed on the BMS website?

Hi thanks for your replies 😊 Yes he is registered with the British Menopause Society and he worked under John Studd I think he’s trying to help me find a solution plus he wants me to get bloods checked and have a scan.
Interestingly the Louise Newson Clinic suggested 14 days on 200mg once every 3 months, so that’s also quite different.
This is why HRT is such a difficult thing so many views so many options.  ::)

It's good he's registered. Sorry if I seem a big paranoid, the trouble with taking medication in a non standard way is that sometimes you don't know you're harming yourself until it's too late. As long as you're having regular scans you'll know if the lining's building up and can take action if it is. The important thing with applying oestrogen is that you do it the same way each time so you get a consistent dose though I think I'd avoid the abdomen. Perhaps it's OK but I wouldn't want to be the guinea pig.

Just spotted this. I'm not a gel user, but it's common enough to apply oestrogen patches to the abdomen  :-\

I was told never to apply gel or patches to the abdomen. Only thighs or bottom for patches and arms and legs for gel x

That's incorrect that all patches can't be placed on the abdomen, I've had estradot patches before and the instructions on the leaflet that come with it say to apply it there, I've had everol aswell and that says thigh or bottom, to avoid confusion I think it's best to always follow the manufacturer's advice, like Sheila99 said extensive testing has been done on there products to see where they work best, x

They said to keep it as far away from your breasts and womb as possible - cancer risk maybe? I think it depends on the patch or gel too x

Ah, I see! Yes, gel to be kept away from breast tissue is the usual advice. E only patch for those of us with no uterus not a problem then  :)
