Mood still low (after reducing then increasing Oestrogel
« on: March 08, 2022, 10:23:42 PM »

Hi Ladies

After recent blood tests my specialist advised that my oestrogen levels were quite high, so to reduce from 4 pumps of oestrogel to 3. My bloods also backed up my request for testosterone so I've been on one pump of tostran alternate days for about 2 weeks now.

I reduced my oestrogel slowly but have been on 3 pumps for quite a few days now.

The last couple of days I've noticed my body aches getting worse , my cravings increasing and worst of all my mood dipping.

Oestrogel had never removed all my symptoms however my improved mood and motivation were a great benefit.

Is the reduction in oestrogel to blame or is it something to do with the testosterone? I'm at a good time of the month regarding progesterone so thats not to blame.

I'm Peri, 47 and been on hrt about a year. Unsuccessfully with patches first and been on oestrogel and utrogestan for 6 months now with relief from some symptoms and been on tostran just 2 weeks.

I feel extremely low tonight  :'(

Thanks Cookie xxxxx

I would suspect oestrogen deficiency. It's best to change one thing at a time so you know what to blame.
What happened on the up to 4 pumps? Were these your previous meno symptoms and did they go when you increased to 4 pumps?

Thanks Sheila

I moved up the pumps pretty quickly when starting on oestrogel  due to my impatience after such a long time of suffering. I probably didn’t stick on 3 pumps long enough to know if that was enough, hence when my blood tests said oestrogen was too high I wasn’t too concerned about reducing it, but now I have, I feel I’ve absolutely crashed. I feel no better this morning and the lowest I’ve felt in a long time.

Thanks Dotty

Yes after hearing you ladies I’m going with 4 pumps today as I feel so low, I’m terrified to go back to that dark place I was in before oestrogel.

Thank you for the support, it means a lot xxx

Hi Ladies

I am really low and struggling again.

You’ll remember I reduced oestrogel and I was at breaking point so I went back up to 4 pumps. I felt my mood improve (from rock bottom worthlessness) after about 3 days but it hasn’t continued to get better. I have not regained the optimism and motivation that oestrogel had previously given me.

I’m trying to work out other reasons for this? Do I need even more Oestrogel because I am now also taking Testosterone? I’m using Tostran 3 times a week and starting to feel the benefits in the bedroom but nothing else yet.
I’ve also had a recurring of my itching skin formication and aching body that had previously been resolved by Oestrogel.
My specialist has retired and her caseload redistributed so I’m to wait another 2 months for a review :( although I’ve today filled out an econsult request for the gp to ask for a sooner review ( this was the suggestion of the specialist secretary).
In the meantime what do you ladies suggest? A reminder, I’m peri, 4 pups oestrogel, 12 days Utrogestan, daily Vagifem and Tostran 1pump 3 times a week.

I’d love your help,
Thanks

You shouldn't need more oestrogen because you're on Tostran but it does sound as though you do need more. Have you levels been tested? Perhaps you don't absorb well or perhaps you need a higher level to feel well. I would try another half or one pump and see if you improve. Have you seen the thread on oestrogel labels? It seems the new one may be a bit weaker.

Hi Sheila

Thanks for your reply. Yes I’ve read about the labels, but I think I’ve had spells on the green squares where I’ve been well, so I’m not sure that’s it.

I’ve also not had Covid that I know of, as I know some ladies feel hrt fails after that.

When you say I won’t need more oestrogen because I’m on testosterone, can you explain what you mean by that please? I had wondered if the oestrogel not working as well was maybe something that had happened once I started on the Tostran, but don’t know enough about it?

The GP phoned me back at lunchtime and has said that she’ll write to the specialist and ask for me to be seen sooner. She offered me anti depressants but I said no because the oestrogel has worked for me before, so ideally I just want it to work again.

I appreciate any input you ladies have,
Thank you

As I understand it if you're oestrogen deficient when you go on T it will be converted to an androgen so you may not the benefit from T. That'swwhy they want you to be stable on oestrogen before prescribing it. I haven't heard of needing more oestrogen because you're on T and I can't think of any reason why you would? I didn't need any more because of it. I have had to increase oestrogen twice though as my symptoms returned getting further towards meno, I think many people do.
