Contact lenses and hrt
« on: April 05, 2022, 10:52:47 AM »

Hello, just wondering if anyone who wears contact lenses had any difficulty after starting hrt as I see this is listed as one of the side effects. Also, weird question, can you use gloves to apply the gel as I usually put in my lenses later and worry about any residue getting on them, despite hand washing.

I use contact lenses and haven’t noticed any issues since being on hrt for nearly 2 years. I also apply oestrogel as soon as I get up in the morning, then wash my hands really well before putting lenses in and face cream on etc. I find there are no issues with this. Hope that helps

Personally more issues with covid and contacts! Covid has increased symptoms/ reduced hrt effectiveness and dry eyes have been an issue. I felt eyes were better as less dry on hrt before covid messed it up.

Hi, I wear contacts and use Oestrogel. No issues as yet, I try to remember to put my contacts in first, then put moisturiser on face, then put the Oestrogel on. Then wash hands as I'm paranoid about transferring it to my kids.
My menopause specialist told me she doesn't wash her hands after applying hers, she leaves it to soak in and dry to get maximum benefit, I just never have time in the mornings for this!

My eyes have been very dry recently so I've virtually given up contact lenses.  However, I have discovered a warm eye mask that you heat in the microwave - I've found it amazing for relieving dryness.  If I remember correctly, the tears that are produced under your eye lids are waxier than normal tears.  Warming the eyes followed by a gently eye massage helps melt and distribute these oils.  I freaked myself out the first time I tried it as I hadn't read all the instructions, and the redistribution of the waxy tears can make your vision blurry, but it was back to normal in a short while.  This has made a big difference to me, and works out cheaper than the preservative free eye drops.
