Period has come back
« on: March 27, 2022, 11:12:48 AM »

Hello 👋

My last period was back in June 2020.

On Friday evening I started to get my classic pre period cramps in my tummy and down the back of my legs. Yesterday was the same and this morning I woke up to my period.

Is this normal after 20 months?

I should add that I've been under a lot of stress at the moment dealing with my poor old mum who has dementia and in the process of arranging for her to go into a nursing home.

Thanks for reading

Mother Nature at her best  >:(.  Not. You got to 12 months without a bleed, then she butts in.

Depending on your age, mayB check with your GP if you need a womb scan to see the measurement of the lining.  It may be simply that your own hormones have kicked back in, now you need to begin counting to the magic 12 months again.

Stress can cause hormonal upheaval as can the after effects of the C-19 vaccination.

Difficult that your Mum needs to go into Care, that will mean that you become a daughter again, rather than a carer.  A nursing home is the best option even if it costs more, because there will be 24/7 qualified nurses on hand.  Apparently the CQC class both 'care' homes and 'nursing' homes under the same banner  >:( so do make sure that the place that you choose is fully 'nursing'.

Let us know how you get on.

I am 51 and was 49 when I had my last period in June 2020.

I'm not on HRT but do use Vagifem twice a week.

This period is just like my periods always were, not very heavy.

I've been under a lot of stress lately and been running all over the place in addition to working full time in quite a demanding job.

I will call my GP surgery tomorrow but I'm thinking it's a case of Mother Nature being a wee pest.

I agree with Dotty. Any bleeding after twelve months without has to be reported to your GP no matter what your age even if it just feels like a return of your normal period

I'm sorry to hear about your mum. Mine too had dementia and I can appreciate that you are in a very stressful situation. Please let us know what your GP says.

I was lucky to get a GP apt first thing and have just returned. The GP was lovely and specialises in all things menopause so provided lots of great info.

She said that yes absolutely post menopausal bleeding should be taken seriously. However, she said that it is not uncommon for women who experience menopause under the age of 51, to have ovulation occur after more than 12 months. I just turned 51 2 weeks ago so was 49 when what I thought was my last period.

She said it was interesting I had the same tell tale pre period symptoms ive had since my periods began as a teenager the day before this period started - a tiny coldsore on my lower left lip, cramps in tummy and groin, tender breasts. All disappear once my period begins and points to this being a period.

She thinks this is my hormones cranking up for a 'final fling' and that is is possible I get a subsequent bleed within 3 months. Any longer or any change to symptoms and bleeding I'm to contact her ASAP.

She said the 12 month cut-off for investigations is guidance and there has to be a cutt off but that many women, particularly younger women will have an occasional period after this.

She was in no way dismissive and took everything I said seriously but I feel reassured.

I spoke to my 2 older sisters last night and one had 2 periods after 16 months of no period and the other had a period after 23 months with no periods. Neither have had any issues with bleeding since.

Thank you for taking the time to reply to my previous posts x

That's great news, hang onto the GP or we will be forming a line  ;)

I wonder why the Herpes virus pops up pre-period?  It's not something that I ever had fortunately but I understand it is quite common.

How do U feel this morning?

Thanks CLKD

Yes it's strange the herpes thing but I always get a tiny coldsore right before a period and it goes away literally overnight once my period arrives. Have done since my teens.

I feel quite reassured today. My period is just like it always was, not very heavy and other than a crampy tum all good.

I was so impressed with the GP, she was happy to give lots of info and wasn't rushing me out the door. She said she wasn't concerned at all but also said that in no way was she dismissing the seriousness of post meno bleeding, just that in my case she believes it's a last hurrah of my hormones! If like she says my period doesn't go away after a few days or I have any further bleeds or concerns I will absolutely go back to see her. She made that very clear but did say not to fret this time.

I was very surprised to learn how common having a period is after the 12 months but will be keeping a very close eye on things.
