Switching from Oestrogel to patches
« on: March 04, 2022, 10:00:12 PM »

Hi, I’m hoping someone can help me.
I’ve been on Oestrogel (4 pumps) and Utrogestan 100mg (continuous) since Sept 21 and been quite successful.
Due to there being no Oestrogel available I’ve been thinking of moving to patches for ease now  I’m settled with my doesage.

I asked my doctor for the equivalent dosage and I’ve been prescribed Estraderm MX 25 but from the limited info I can find on the internet I think this is the equivalent of one pump a day?

Typically it’s Friday, Im nearly out of gel and so need to start on these this weekend.

Does anyone have any experience of swapping and what was the equivalent dose you swapped to? Im wondering if I need the Estraderm 100?

Any help gratefully received!

Hi yes you would need a 100 patch for a rough equivalent of 4 pumps x

Thanks so much for the reply.

It’s really frustrating that there is so much good work being done about HRT promotion but GP’s not being up to speed about this. It seems to be a common occurrence that oestrogel supplies run out. The BMS do have a leaflet about alternatives but they cover switching from patches to patch or patch to gel but not the other way around. (Although I’ve just guessed at reversing it which is how I realised the mistake they’d made).

I was told by the pharmacy that the gel comes from Eastern Europe so this may become a bigger problem. 😳

Hi I wouldn’t believe everything that pharmacies tell you. I was told that they were changing the packaging to sell it over the counter which is absolute rubbish !!!!!

I have had no issues getting Oestrogel but am having to switch to patches as can't get appointment for Mirena to be replaced. As i can't tolerate Utrogestan i have been prescribed Femseven Conti but that is a 50 mcg patch and iuse 3 pumps of Oestrogel.

Hmmmm, that’s interesting about pharmacies because I have a friend who is a pharmacist for Boots and they didn’t have any locally but then a friend was able to get some.

I just find it really frustrating that we still struggle with HRT issues in this country - surely it shouldn’t be this hard!

What was it you couldn’t tolerate about the utrogestan?

I am currently taking an anti depressants to counteract what I think are the effects of the progesterone.

I came off anti depressants a year before I started taking HRT quite successfully but once I started taking HRT I nose dived spectacularly- ending up off work for three months with the anxiety. Once I started taking the anti-d it made a big difference.

Same, I’m on sertraline and it’s always been great.

Been on Estraderm 100 patches for just over a week and I have had the mother of all headaches, am starting to become anxious again and irritable!!!

Do they absorb differently? Having patches is so much more easier than the gel but not sure I can go back to the hell of the anxiety I was suffering!

I went from 3 pumps of gel to 75 evorel patch, it’s actually too much so I’m going down to 50 patch. But I only just started on it all in September so it makes sense we need to adjust. I don’t think that sounds like you’ve been given the right patch at all. It should be at least 75 or maybe 100.

I’ve recently changed from gel to patch and found that I need a higher dose in the patch I went from 31/2 pumps of gel to 100 oestrodot patch and found I’m now getting more anxiety and hot feelings and am currently waiting for a referral to menopause clinic as I’m on the max dose of patch my doctor can prescribe.

I’m debating reducing the size of my patch by just cutting a quarter off to see if that helps. It’s really hard to figure out which way I need to go with this but I can’t carry on with these headaches because they are agony. I’m going through painkillers like you wouldn’t believe which can’t be good for me.

It’s so crap that we have to figure this out without specialist help. 🤯
