Covid Blood Pressure and HRT
« on: March 11, 2022, 09:37:52 AM »

Hello everyone, my first post although I've lurked before and found this forum hugely helpful. I wonder if anyone has an advice for me here....

I am 50 now and I usually have low blood pressure, I started HRT some 2 years ago (Oestrogel 2 pumps - 1 each leg daily and Utrogestan 2 tablets first 14 days of each month) both are working well to combat my symptoms (hot flushes, hair loss etc). I do have a family history of blood clots and stroke and a previous blood test some 15 years ago showed blood clotting likelihood was high, but weighing it all and with my hormone blood test results showing I was in menopause up I decided to give it a try and it's been going well.

Until this week when I got covid (I am on the critically vulnerable covid list due to a blood cancer which I've not had treatment for yet - I'm on watch and wait - my specialist said HRT would be fine). After 2 years of shielding and 4 vaccines I went back to work and got it on the first day out. I had my last covid jab 2 weeks before.

When I spoke to my GP who is calling me every few days to see how I am, she mentioned that Covid/Jabs can elevate BP so I checked it last night and it was 149/82 which is 50 odd higher than my normal levels. So I didn't take my utrogestan tablet last night and I'm wondering whether to just use the gel until I'm over Covid or whether I stop that too. (reading the tablet leaflet scared me enough to not take it!).

I have had sore legs which I put down to lying down this week being sick, I'm trying to move around a bit more now and taking aspirin. I will mention this to do the Dr when I speak to her next on Monday and ask her but until then I'm not sure what to do - I suspect I stop the HRT until I'm over Covid and my blood pressure hopefully comes down to normal.

Anyone in a similar situation? Any advice re: stopping/starting HRT again during a (hopefully) short period?
Thanks!

I wouldn't stop any medication if it's helping.  I would however take my BP 3 times in the morning and again in the evening. The very fact of taking BP can raise levels if not done on a regular basis.

If you have Covid it may well be that you will ache all over, though not necessarily at the same time.  So your legs aching may well be a sign of the body being under stress.  Do they ache usually?  Does aspirin ease the pain?

Rest.  Keep well hydrated.  Take Paracetamol and Nurofen during the day.

If one stops HRT it may not work as well the next time.

Hi Menpause. I'm sorry that you are having to deal with so many things at once. Your reading is in the very first stage of high blood pressure and I would think that a lot of this is to do with having a viral infection which causes the body to be under stress. Have you had a look at the Blood Pressure UK site? https://www.bloodpressureuk.org/your-blood-pressure/understanding-your-blood-pressure/what-do-the-numbers-mean/

Muscle pain is a very common symptom of the Omicron variant - especially the back and legs. Can you get any advice from your blood cancer specialist?

Please let us know how you get on.

By the way if you have missed a utrogestan tablet you  may get some spotting/bleeding.
