Does HRT help manage weight gain in menopause
« on: February 14, 2022, 04:19:50 PM »

Hi all, just after some other ladies experiences. I had total hysterectomy 2 years ago now, my 5 days in hospital and with having a massive tumour removed, I was nearly 3 stone lighter, in 5 days! But, I began to put the weight on. 3 stone crept back on in 2 years. I did a strict diet for 6 wks and lost over a stone, but realistically I can't do that particular diet forever more. I am aware of what I eat, what is healthy, lots of research etc and what can help menopause symptoms. I do have hot flushes, which are bareable, I get tired at certain times of the day, and worst is I have really lost my libido. I am 50. My real concern is the weight gain. I am now 17 stone. I am going to ask my Dr next week, hopefully, about taking HRT, really to see if it will help my body stop storing fat. I can see that this fat is different to before. Visceral fat I believe it is called. I have got chubby, like I have a fat suit on. I was never slim but this is different since my hysterectomy so I am assuming it's hormonal. Do you think my weight gain could change with HRT, and of course continue with healthy eating diet and exercise. Getting quite scared now as never been this chubby or heavy. Thanks

Hi lou38, I too had a hysterectomy 5 years ago, I retained my ovaries, did you have yours removed?, not sure if weight issues are affected more with Ovaries being removed or not, but to answer your question and only from my own experience, hrt did nothing to help with weight gain for me, I weighed 10st before hrt, I now weigh 11st 5lbs,so i have gained weight, alot say hrt doesn't cause weight gain, it's down to menopause, I still eat well and exercise but I seem to keep gaining weight, I also get bloated alot and swollen legs on hrt, I've been on patches and now estrogel, I think it's very different for everyone and what side effects they do or don't get, same with menopause symptoms, I would definitely say hrt is not a good option just to try and control weight I doubt it would, but the leaflet that comes with my hrt lists weight gain and weight loss as a side effect, I would talk to your gp about a better option to control/loose weight, it will help with flushes, tiredness and libido so worth trying hrt for those issues.
Good luck

Hrt has done nothing for me in the weight department, I think the best you can hope for is that you have more energy so are better able to exercise. I think it may have more to do with our metabolism slowing as we age so we need fewer calories. I've been able to eat what I like and stay slim until recently. Now the only way I can do it is to be on a permanent diet, not a strict one but I have to eat less.
For many women libido is restored with oestrogen, others need testosterone.
