Hello everyone
Hoping someone has a shared experience of ADHD and menopause . Grab a cup of tea, it might be a long post!
Age 50, I began to suffer from anxiety, overwhelm, exhaustion, night sweats and inability to speak the words I wanted to say. Freaking out, I thought I had a brain tumour or dementia. Luckily it was only menopause ! hrt consisting of patches, mirena and testogel seemed to smooth out the worst of it.
However, whilst the hot sweats stayed away the brain issues gradually came back and I was really struggling at work to be productive. At the same time my daughter who was also struggling was diagnosed with ADHD and I was struck by how similar our symptoms were. Anyhow long story short I was also diagnosed and the ADHD meds cleared up ALL of my brain fog and angst symptoms, including the insatiable carb cravings I had been battling with.
Anyhow, all was fine for 2 years but then the hot sweats returned. I went privately this time and blood tests revealed that I was good for oestrogen but had basically no progesterone. I was then given uterogestan. I’ve persevered as instructed since September with different regimes ie oral /vaginal /100 /200. It seems to have stopped the hot sweats and helps me sleep BUT I feel terrible. Bloated, premenstrual my ADHD meds are no longer as effective. I’ve had to up my dose and they now just take the edge of my overwhelm and productivity problems including not being able to find the right word and hideous carb cravings.
So questions are,
1) Has anyone else had this ?
2) Do we need progesterone and oestrogen balance rather than just oestrogen in order to benefit from the wider health benefits as the specialist said.
3) any one have any scientific papers/ webinars blogs about progesterone and adhd and stimulants ??
Thank you in advance!
