Memory foam mattress
« on: January 04, 2022, 08:49:38 PM »

Does anybody out there think that memory foam mattresses make night sweats worse. I feel so much better with everything but still have horrendous night sweats. Really awful¡!

I know someone whose husband had awful night sweats and they thought it was his medication. She eventually found out some people react badly (allergic) to memory foam mattress. She changed mattress and problem solved. Maybe google it :)

I found my hybrid memory foam mattress quite hot through the sheet, so I added a single duet under the matress protector. It turned it into a pillow topped mattress and made the mattress cooler and softer.

I didn't get on at all well with memory foam. I don't think it's a good fit for thermoregulatory problems. 👎

Hello Clarebelle1 and welcome to the forum.

I read somewhere that foam and moisture are a bad combination.

Back in the day an American friend sent me a foam pillow that was designed to place your new baby on after a bath. It was shaped to hold the baby securely and had a towelling cover but I had heard that damp foam could grow mold or was just generally unhealthy because it took so long to dry.  For these reasons I never used the pillow and laid my daughter on a towel instead. This was a long time ago so hopefully memory foam is better at dealing with moisture but I thought that  it was worth a mention.

Take care.

K.

Without a doubt clareabelle they are bad for night sweats.  I have recently replaced one with a supposedly cooling, silk-topped summer-winter mattress (reversible - different construction each side) for that very reason & it's proving quite an improvement.  If you google hard enough you'll find memory foam is notorious for its insulating properties.  Unfortunately, some years ago I believed a salesman who insisted otherwise.  Have spoken more recently to a good mattress specialist about new memory foam variants marketed as cooling & he tells these are not much better & also best avoided by ladies with thermoregulation probs!  Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.  I hope you manage to find a way around it.

I dislike memory foam too, I sent a Tempur back as it was unbearably hot five years before I’d heard of the menopause or night sweats.

A memory foam surely gets the body into bad habits  :-\

I remember sleeping on a straw/feather mattress as a child, it never 'gave' - once the body shape was formed, that was it, even after it was shaken and turned over  :o

I've got a memory foam topper which gets swapped around from under or over the mattress, (depending on my bad back  :-\), and I haven't noticed a difference - I throw the duvet off about a million times a night no matter what. I found sleeping on a folded duvet under the sheet to be hottest.

I love my memory foam topper.  It prevents pressure points that trigger sciatic pain.  I've always used it with a breathable boiled wool mattress pad on top, so I've never noticed any issues with heat or moisture.
